Post by: genkicoll on March 06, 2006, 06:11:44 PM: Here is a Savannah rest area. These 2 restaurants serve the entire zoo (small map), and the guests are extremely happy. I made this zoo with NO UCI's, and did not have CC at the time.
Zoo stats are:
Zoo Rating = 95
Guest Happiness = 93
Animal Happiness = 98

Post by: genkicoll on March 31, 2006, 07:52:50 AM: I have 2 zoos I am working on right now, and with this one, I wanted to do something a little different with my zoo entrance. Walking straight ahead into the zoo will bring you to the rest area, where you can dine AND view animals every which way you look! Here in our Exhibition Zoo entrance area, you will find Komodo Dragons and Crocodiles on your left, and Caudiptyrex and Anteaters on your right.

At the time this picture was taken, guest happiness had just hit 95 :wtg If you'll take a closer look, you'll see that guests are confined to ONLY the entrance area, with the rest of the park blocked off with decorative fencing. There are 2 reasons for this at the moment: 1st, I haven't done any other building yet! :hehe and more importantly, this method will garner you LOTS of benefactors. I'll add at least 3 exhibits on ONE SIDE of the entrance before I open that side up for guests to peruse, then do the same for the other sides. Using this method, I have one zoo with over 600 benefactors. You read that right - Six HUNDRED!!!

Post by: genkicoll on April 01, 2006, 08:01:14 AM: Heading to the left of the entrance, we continue with the rainforest theme. On your left side you'll find an exhibit of very happy Bengal and White Bengal Tigers.

and on your right, Black Leopards share their exhibit with Clouded Leopards - suitability for these animals is 99 & 98, respectively.

TIP: When you're starting off with mixed exhibits, the best way to do so is to build the animal exhibits side by side, separated by only a fence. When you get the animal suitability as high as you can, then delete the fence separating them. Tweak as needed :)

You can see that there is still decorative fencing blocking the guests' path because I haven't finished building past this area. Guest happiness is now at 97 with 351 guests :D

Post by: KingCow on April 01, 2006, 09:12:45 AM: wow, that leopard-mix exhibit rox! but I have a little pet peeve; i don't like the iron bar fence. since you have the elevated viewing area, you should change the leveled fence to a concrete fence, without the windows. then it would give the guests more of a surprise, and it looks much more realistic. other than that, the zoo looks awesome!

Post by: genkicoll on April 01, 2006, 05:03:58 PM: I leave the fencing as iron-bar until the animals start to feel crowded (unless they're usually shy, in which case I start with the rock wall) because the more the guests see happy animals, the happier THEY are! :D

As guests pass the great cats, they will come to a corner where they see Mandrills on their left, and an Okapi/Bongo mixed exhibit straight ahead. Because the Okapi are so picky, their exhibit suitability is at 99%, while the Bongos have an 89% suitability. Animal happiness for both species is 100%, and both have had babies :D

Continuing around the corner, the guests will see a rest area with an animal theater, playground for the kids and restaurant...

Use of the invisible fence to separate the exhibits gives the illusion of a combined exhibit. Separate, each exhibit is at 100% suitability. If the invisible fencing is removed, the Elephants are at 96% suitability, and the Rhinos at 99%. While this would work, I like the exhibits just fine as-is, so I left the fence separating them :P

I've never used the lava path (despite having created it :P), and that's what inspired this zoo. :D Instead of giving a creative tour, I'll be rating the animals as I go.

Here by the entrance we have the Mythic Salamander (top exhibit) and the Lavagator (bottom exhibit):

I like the Mythic Salamander, but it's exhibit is extremely boring. It requires solid gray stone, and lava pits, volcanoes and such are habitat neutral, but it will not tolerate any foliage or rocks, and the highest suitability I can get it is 81% - with the colorful ferns I put in, the suitability dropped to 80%.
Conversely, the Lavagator is one of my favorite user-created animals ever! They're black gators at first glance, but glow red around the edges in the water. Lovely exhibit that needs brown and gray stone, dirt and salt water, as well as some elevation. Guests absolutely love this animal (I'll get back to you on the Mythic Salamanders, I forgot to look :P)

When I took this shot, what you see is all there is in the zoo, and guest happiness had just hit 96%!

Both are programmed to have volcanoes/tar pits in their exhibits with no effect on their happiness, making for some interesting exhibits :D

They are programmed closely enough that they can go in a combined exhibit, but I'm a stickler where exhibit suitability is concerned, so these 2 exhibits are separated by an invisible fence. Both are crowd pleasers and a lot of fun! Alternate view of the Volcanic Unis with a view of the entrance:

Next is the Dragon, or Flying Dragon from here at ZA. An uninspired shot as far as photography goes, but you can see that even the babies breathe fire ;)

The highest I could get the suitability for these dragons is in the low 90's, always a point of contention for me, but the animals are happy, which is always a plus. There's a glitch with this animal that shows that the preferred foliage is the Baobob tree, when in reality they prefer a highland exhibit with Himalayan Pine trees, etc.

The Eurasian Wyvern is a fun animal, and very nicely done.

You can see the Wyverns in the background here, as well. In the foreground are my favorite user-created dragon, Lehner's Red Dragon :wub At first glance this dragon seems a bit strange, but it has a lovely exhibit (which in this case I tried to make a bit more natural, which is why you can't see some of them clearly) and is absolutely adorable. It's the only dragon I've seen that both walks and flies, and it will suddenly plop onto its side and curl up for a nap - so cute! :wub

The Red Worg from Zoo Tek is a handsome creature with a haunting wolf-song. They breed quickly (but not so quickly that you're frantically selling to keep the exhibit from being crowded), and make an interesting exhibit:

Next I put in a savannah exhibit with zebras, gazelles, ostriches, water buffalo and wildebeest, using the oasis to make the exhibit a bit more interesting...and yes, you DO see a tar pit in the exhibit! A little something extra for more interest, but it's separated from the actual exhibit with invisible fencing ;)

The tiger has a wonderfully interesting exhibit as you can see :D The turtle is a lovely dark bluish color, and THIS turtle certainly doesn't poke around! This little guy is FAST!

These 2 restaurants will feed every person in the zoo up to the max allowed guests (1000). There are no other food stands or snack machines (or bathrooms, etc) in the whole zoo. I will put in the first restaurant and just leave an empty space for the 2nd restaurant until there seem to be a lot of hungry guests - THEN I add the 2nd one. For small maps, it's been a very successful tactic to use - they make loads of money and the guests are very happy :D

The Japanese Pic took about...mmm...maybe an hour? The contest ends soon, and the winner will be voted on by ZTUF members. At the moment there are only 2 other entries, so at this point I'll at least end up in one of the top 3 spots! :lol:

The "Abalone Avenue" pathway was made by my protege at ZTUF, Stormy. Between the two of us, we have over 200 paths out ^__^ See? The Stepping Stone path is just my most recent release. :)
The waterfalls (one the elevated portion of the restaurants) are actually an animated fence (well, fences, actually) that I made for Tek - along with matching, animated water-terrain paths (so that you can have water running down slopes!).

Only problem is that there doesn't currently seem to be a way to program a DOWN elevator, which is why there's a ramp leading up, as well. Besides, only happy guests will use attractions, so we wouldn't want any angry guests stuck at the top of a cliff :P

An interesting thing to note is that guests at the bottom of the cliff CAN see the unicorns - apparantly, map depth does not affect the guests' ability to see.

Since it didn't matter what the suitability was for the animals, I made the exhibit a bit more snowy, and used Tek's new snowy post and rail fence as an enclosure. It's programmed as a decorative fence, but can be used for exhibits if used with the invisible fence ;)

Taking a step back in time, a zoo I did for Tek's Color Wheel of Fortune contest. We had to pick a color, then Jan PM'd us our task for the contest. I picked blue, and my theme was BLUE and BEARS. First I laid out my design based on the number of exhibits I was going to need. I bordered EVERY fence in the zoo with Catfish's blue vines (this was before we turned them into fences - would've been a LOT easier if they'd been fences THEN! lol~).

Then I decorated with flowers on top of the "barkdust", just like you would with real landscaping. :)

There's also barkdust, a couple of other kinds of grass, etc. At some point I'm going to combine all the landscaping paths together in a single ztd, but I keep forgetting to do it :slol:
