It says under whale shark fun facts that the ones you adopt are adolesents then they grow to be larger. Is that cool or what?!:woot:
-
...Umm, I guess so...
Why is that cool? Babies grow up. Full grown whale sharks are too large to transpoert, so babies are needed.
-
Thank goodness! I always thougth the whale sharks were too small! But now that I know they grow, I'm not upset anymore!  Personally, I think BF should have done the same with the white shark. : :) :
-
This is fantastic! Adds a great sense of realism to the zoos.
-
i know, i was kind of dissapointed when i made my huge reef exhibit,(i never put whale sharks in benthic, it just looks wrong.) just to find that the whale sharks were small. then i went to the zoopedia and read the line that says the whale sharks will grow and im all yipeee.!!!!:woot:
-
Really? I've never tryed whale sharks yet, this is exciting! I wonder how big they will get...
-
I think that fact was for real life not in the game. I havent seen the adopted ones grow any larger yet. Oh and to Panda King its cool because the adults grow larger, which is a first in zoo tycoon series.
-

I beliee they do, because it warns you in zoopedia that eventually you'll have to replace them because they outgrown their tanks. But I think it's slowly.
-
Sweet I have to try this, and take photos of it next to other animals to see how fast it grows!
-
I learned this the hard way. I had a big reef exhibet with whale sharks , mantas , dolphins , and reef sharks. The whale sharks were fine until at one point I was pummeled by " The water is to shallow for Whale Shark 1 " and stuff . I noticed my whale sharks were now hugenormous. Now I always remember to make the exhibet biggerer than usual.
-
Has anyone actually had one grow? Because one of the problems in the beta was that they never did and I'm not sure if this has been fixed.
-
This is awesome! The two whale sharks at the Atlanta Aquarium are both still young, about 28 feet long, at least when I saw them they were. Their exhibit is a reef exhibit, and it is designed for fully grown whale sharks. They are estimated to grow to be around 60 feet!
-

Actually, it's just like adopting a baby animal. I guess it's pretty neat.
-
Does anyone know if the game says something like "Whale Shark 3 has just grown to full size" or soemthign like that?
-
This is a cool feature, they should do this more often! I like how the whale shark grows as time goes by, very cool idea. : :P :
-
i dont know, but i didnt think they would be able to reproduce until they were full grown, but about 8 3 foot little plankton eaters told me otherwise.
-
Hmm, I've had one for a while and he doesn't seem to have grown. How long does it take? How big a tank will a full-sized one need?
Guests sure love him! He seems to be pretty curious about the guests as well.
-
yes, i have noticed that behavior, along with a few others in other animals. my guests always love the sharks.
-
I do love how realistic they are trying to make this. Even more so as each EP is released!
-

Really!!!! LOL
-
This is pretty :specool: , and very realistic. Praise to Blue Fang!

about how long did you have those whale sharks? i just want to see them so badly as super sharks.: :P : :woot:
-
I have them in a tank for a year (game time) and they have had babies and dint grow an inch. But there are differnt sizes. I took my male out of his tank and stuck him in shallow water. Then I adopted a female and she was 2x bigger then he was!
-
Wow! werid!
-
has anyone had a whale shark grow yet? maybe it takes like a couple game years.
-
So do they grow? I've had mine for six months, and they've bred, but there's no change in size. Could somebody with fully grown ones please post pictures?
-
I Think It's Great That The Whale Sharks Grow Up. Blue Fang have once again proved their unpredictability (in a good way)
-
Does anyone have a picture? Maybe you could have two pictures side by side, showing the juvenile, then the full grown adult. That'd be :specool: .
-
It's been one and a half years and still no change. I'm beginning to think they don't after all - if they do they take much too long to do so.
-
Just one of those little detailes I missed so thanks I now know why they look wrong

How long does it take because I had mine for just over a year and they didn't grow
at all.:hairpull:

Welcome to Ixion's lecture o' da' day!!! : :) : In the fish (sometimes), reptile :turtle1: (sometimes), and insect worlds :spider: , the females are traditionally BIGGER. Since your whale shark is a a fish, she will be bigger than Mr. Scrawny over here. Same ting in ya Blue Mahlins. Ya female is ruffly 2.5X biggah then ya male. Kapiesch(sp?)? :hmmm:
-
You are right, but, please, improve your grammar, please.
BTW, I love the curiousness about the guests. I've not seen them grow yet.
-
Not always - male fish are generally the same size as females or larger. This depends on the species. Females ARE larger, but not 2.5 times larger.
I don't think it grows at all - 2 years and no change.
-

can you please post a pic of your adult whale shark?:crying: i have had mine for a year and no change : :( : thanks if you do!:original:
-
Well fish grow to the size of their tank usually - if you have a goldfish in a small bowl, he won't grow very large, but if you put him in a 50 gallon tank he will grow over 5 inches or more (depending on how many fish are in there with him). Is this maybe the problem? has anyone had a single whale shark in a ginormous tank?
-
I think mikaboshi might be right. The zoopedia did say to make the tanks extra big.
-
this is really cool! maybe if someone finds the coding for it, then we can have the same thing for other animals and have babies grow bigger? that would be awesome : :) :
-
Hmm, just as a point of discussion, I just went to go explore the XML files, and The Whale Shark has a set that doesn't exist with any other animal. Usually, an animal has a main one, and then a set of Adult ones, and then a set of Young ones. The Whale Shark also has a set of ones labeled as "old". Whether you've seen them grow or not, I can almost say for sure that they do. It may take several years, but it'll happen. I'll report back with anything else I find.
Edit: the Adult model is scaled at 0.9, the "Old" model is scaled at 1.4
-
yes mikaboshi is right! i just saw them and maybe we can get other animals to grow aswell...
-
Hard to say - I don't know exactly how the files work in tandum just yet, but I will research them a bit and see what I can find. Though, I don't know if you will be able to apply this to the babies....unless when they grow up, they go to a "teenage" year and then sometime later they go to the final "adult" stage. But right now I'm not quite sure how the game knows when to reference the Old file.
-
You are right, but, please, improve your grammar, please.
BTW, I love the curiousness about the guests. I've not seen them grow yet.
Please look at Crooky's second quote in his signature, Eriorguez. then you will see why I purposefully act this way. :original:
EDIT- i just read pengieman's thing about the short flamage between me and Eroguez(sp?) in the hybrids thread. I'm sorry, I won't do it again publicly.
-
:specool: I dont know if its true or not:innocent: for the whail shark but some fish well slow down and may even stop growing if space gets tight  . maybe they need more room . We have babies and they grow up so we know they could all so be babies:original:
-
i dont know, i always give them a super colassal tank, but a year and a 1/2, and no big fishies.
-
well the lifespan of them is great, and the xml is called OLD. I'm thinking you have to wait a LONG time.
-
did anyone read what mika sed? they do grow it just might take a long time and as of now no one knows how long it takes besides the people who made the game. so this is a question for BF: how long does it actually take to grow a whale shark?
-
i dont know, but im going to start a zoo, and not stop it till i see a big, Big, BIG fishie.:surprise:
maybe its possible to make a faster growing hack.
-
Well, right now I'm still not sure what part of the coding makes it switch from Adult to Old XML files.
-
Well, dinwrest said he had one grow really big. I haven't yet. I put some in and they bred, but they haven't grown any bigger yet. Also, they seem to be very curious about the guests; they swim right up to the tank wall, and when I clicked on one of them and looked at their behavior, it said "Looking at John Frank"( guest name)
-
i just found out that the whale shark isn't the only animal which can grow. I was playing the double feature scenario today and noticed one of my blue marlins looked suspiciously large. I purchased another marlin, put the two side by side and realized that my old marlin was in fact bigger. I took a photo to prove it (note going from back to front the order is baby, adult, old adult and all of them are female). http://i108.photobucket.com/albums/n2/sheltiefan_2006/bluemarlingrows.jpg?t=1165785867
-
 Whoa, that's weird. I guess they do grow! :surprise: I don't exactly see why, unless that's how big they really are, and that they supposubly grow like the whale shark. :hmmm:
-

are you sure thats not just a female, the female marlins are much bigger than males in the game
-
She said that they are all females though wolfkid, otherwise I would have asked the same question.
Let me go check those files as well
Edit: Hmm..just checked and the only animal with an Old.xml is the Whale Shark. It should not be possible for an older Marlin (or ANY other MM2 animal) to grow.
-
Well I'm certain they where all female I checked very carefully. I'll go see again but I'm certain they are all female.
-
Thanks Sheltie! Not trying to discredit you, hun, I promise  It's possible that they aren't coded the same way the Whale Shark is.
-
Mika I know your not trying to discredit me it's just that I just needed to prove it for myself. Anyways I've gone back and checked again and sure enough they are all female. I took this pic to be sure.
http://i108.photobucket.com/albums/n2/sheltiefan_2006/BlueMarlingrows2.jpg?t=1165805535
As you can see I've got the biggest marlin (number 2) highlighted with the mouse, the middle marlin selected (marlin 5) whom you can see is indeed female, and the last one is indeed a baby female (not that it matters as the young are all the same size). So yes they must be coded differently than the whale shark, I have a feeling the majority of the sharks also grow with age but that's just a theory.
-
I'm glad that you are doing investigative work for us Sheltie!
That is so interesting lol
-
oh cool then i wonder what other secrets BF put in the game for us! we should probably ask one of the BF representatives if theres more =)
-
It must be hidden in some coding I can't see; I don't see anywhere in the XMLs where it would change the size of the model... perplexing indeed!
-
Strange, I'll guess we'll probably never know, unless the 'Old' file in the whale shark is shared with the marlin.
-
Well...hmm. I was going to say no, because then the model for the marlin would be the same size as the whale shark, but that's incorrect, because the models are different sizes to begin with. I've got a tank full of 60 marlin right now who are hopefully going to grow for me...(I only started with 4 ) and also a tank of 6 whale sharks that take up the other side of the zoo. We'll see what happens! I just hit the one year mark on them.
-
mika maybe the old file increases their size by 200% of the original meaning that the two animals wouldnt be the same size they would just be 2 times bigger than their original
-
My marlins don't seem to grow at all - how long did you have them for sheltiefan?
-
Yeah, none of my animals don't seem to grow at all, only whale sharks as far as I know.
-
Well I'm not really sure how old they were in game years as it was a campaign so I didn't place them in the zoo they were already there. They were at least a year old, both the original male and female were larger than the other fish of the same gender.
-
Well, alriright, the whale shark babies didn't even grow into adults for me until after about 2 zoo years, so I'm going to assume that with that type of life span, the adults won't grow up until quite a few years (5 maybe?)
I left my game running for 2 years, but had to stop when I had 500 Marlins and 200 eggs on the way to being hatched. I will say that Marlin 1 was still alive but she had not grown any larger than the rest of the marlins in the tank. Quite a mystery, I'll say.
-
Well, I've recently begun a zoo with one huge whale shark tank that takes up the entire zoo. I will keep this game running until either a whale shark grows or dies. I bought the whale sharks on Jan 4th Year 1, so whenever I figure out they grow, I should be somewhat precise. I have two computers side by side each other and I'm gonna watch the sharks while I entertain myself. I'll update every year so please check back to this post every now and again.
Sep. Year 1
The zoo started out with four sharks, two male two female. Now there are eight, five female three male. I might release two of the babies when they get older. No growing yet.
Oct. Year 2
All of the babies just grew up and I released two of the female babies. Now there are three females and three males. Either then the babies, there hasn't been any growing. Hopefully we'll see some growing in the next year or so. I think I might have noticed a varient skin though, One is brownish gray with small, neat, almost aboriginal style dots in a straight line pattern. The other skin is more blue gray and the dots are bigger and less in a pattern. Upon request, I might put up a few pictures. Please stay tuned!
Feb Year 3
I just thought I'd let everyone know that the three females I have just gave birth. There are now twelve whale sharks. I'm going to release all but two of the babies when they grow. Still, no growing yet.
Oct Year 3
Well, not even the babies have grown yet. The adults are still not growing either, not even whale sharks 1-4.
-
maybe its a random thing where once it gets to a point it either grows or it doesnt
i have had 2 out of 80 grow to a giant size (i didnt have 80 sharks in one tank iv had 80 in all) i would tell you how long it took but.... i really dont know lol i think the times that they grow are also random.
-
Eurika!! It grew!! I found it in August Year 4. I'm busy at the moment so I'll post more pics later! I don't have any babies at the time, so I can't show all three sizes but here is the adult and older adult!!
-
thats a BIG fish! and a Very Very LONG time for adulthood.......
i dont play my zoos for even a year cause of them darn guests and the overpopulating animals and also the lackage of space in the zoo and boredom and i could go on and on
oh well too bad for me.....:crying:
is it truly real life possible for adolesent sharks to breed?:dindin:
-
WOW!!! That is a big difference!
-
Wow Amazing probably one of the best things in MM
-
That's so Great, thanks for posting that pic monster!
-
I love whale sharks. that is awsome, nice job.
-
Awesome!
How much bigger does it look in Guest mode?
-
So I bought the new MM expansion, and I was real excited about the whale shark because I thought they would be more life size, but they're tiny compared to real whale sharks. They're only half the size they should be, and I was wondering if anybody could make a whale shark download making them bigger or tell me how to do it myself.

not to be off topic but.... how do you start a new topic?
ive been wondering for a long while
-
There is a "New Topic" button on the top of the forums. For instance, if you want to start a new Show and Tell Topic, go to the Show and Tell Section, and in the upper right hand corner will be a "New Topic" button. Remember to search first though if you are asking a question. We have over 1000 active members on ZA and chances are at least one of them has wondered the same thing you are.

Whoa! I really do need to search before I post. Sorry bout that.:original:

ive had my whale shark for about 3-4 years and its mated 2 times and gave birth to 4 pups each time. now i just got this message!

so now we know the game tells us =]

-
aaaaaaaaaaaaaah i c - i wondered why they were so small (is the smallest one in the picture a baby one or one straight after adopting??)
-
a baby
-
Wow that's really cool!
-
I wonder if it could be done to other animals, user or even official: I'd love a growing AS tortoise.
-
Wow, thanks for the picture, wolfkid! I am glad it tells us when they grow up. Lol, I just wish it wouldnt take that long, though.
-
I think that fact was for real life not in the game. I havent seen the adopted ones grow any larger yet. Oh and to Panda King its cool because the adults grow larger, which is a first in zoo tycoon series.
I don't think they grow because they can breed right when you get them.
-
That is really cool, so many things about MM2 are making me wanna go out and buy it!

CCCCCCOOOOOOLLLLLL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!   That never happened to me before!
-
IT'S TRUE! I built a Pelagic tank with Whale Sharks, Marlin and Pilot Whales (reef or benthic aren't the right biomes for Whale Sharks) And soon, they all need more space. And guess who's fault it was [points to Wally and Wanda the Whale Sharks]
-
That is sweet! I didn't reaslise that they grow! Awesome! *runs off to watch whale sharks*
-
thats soo cool! :bounce: when i got the game i was like, crud, the whale sharks are tiny :| but they grow! wooo! :D
-
They rock. I even did this experiment myself. ;)
-
hi guys, long time no see, this is actually conservationkid, but after such a long time without internet, my name must have terminated. My first comment is AWESOME!!!! I have to go play now, but for FOUR years, that's a really long time for me. Secondly is, can someone make a hack to make the whale shark and great white shark like a biome other than benthic, i don't know what Blue Fang was thinking. Goblin shark, yes, whale shark, no. I just watched Blue Planet on ANimal Planet, and the Whale Sharks were featured in the coral reef section of the show. SHEESH. LOL. Well, it's good to be back. Hope to get a response soon. :dolphin
-
:surprise:  Holey cow, that's huge! They even give you a message about it. :happy2: Nice job wolfkid.
-
i'm going on 4 years now, in January of the 4th year actually, and still no growth, multiple matings, but nothing more. ne advice, should i keep waiting? :ohmy
-
I would give it a little more time. It looks like the experiments people have done have resulted in them growing in about 4 years or so, and possibly it could be variable (not exact all the time) so you'll probably see them grow soon! :)
-
off topic: I've read an encyclopedia on animals and I just got this piece of info from it: Whale sharks generally inhabit open ocean, moving into deep water and coral reefs to feed. So, technically, they're benthic, pelagic AND reef biomes.
on topic: It took mine 5 in-game years to grow to full size, yet he had 12 pups! (mated 3 times, each with 4 pups) :ohmy :juggle: :hammer2:
-
It's really cool that it grows! the first thing my mom said when she saw the new whale shark in my zoo was 'oh my goodness it's tiny.' now i can tell her it'll get bigger.
