In a campaign or challenge I go for mixed exhibits so I don't spend too much on fencing!
e.g. Dromedary Camel and Scimitar Horned Oryx
      Reindeer and Musk Ox
In freeform I'll usually have themed areas and pick animals from that theme to join the area

Put the more inexpensive animals at the beginning of the zoo, then put the medium priced animals in the middle, and the expensive animals at or near the back of the zoo.: :) :

If I'm doing a campaign, I usally look for cheaper animals first that I know can be combined easily with another animal. For instance, I like to start off with reindeer and Musk Ox because they get together well and are available at low fame levels. If I'm working with a small map, my choices are dependent on space issues. Freeform, I just use whatever feels right at that time.

Depends on my fame rating,  But i usually do theme areas with animals from the same region.

I also have a mental note of what's next, currently on challenge zoo am going to orangs in next to go with my javan rhino and crested gibbon breeding centres.  I kinda go mad, i have 10 crested gibbons at the moment in 5 breedings pairs with two females currently pregant! aswell as 7 javan rhinos in one area.  This area takes up about an 8th of the map, but will double when the orangs are but in.

I take the animals usually in pairs of species, choosing them by random.
Ie:
"Errrm, African elephant. Couple of them and couple of Asian ones, in savannah."

I usually like to go by biome. I start off with alpine and go down the list. I try to make it look like you are entering a different part of the world, that way it is more interesting for me when I go through the zoo in zookeeper mode.

I like to check what the "Most Wanted" animal. I just check my guests, and WHAM! Or, if I have that animal, I theme an area.:original:

I usually just pick an animal out of the blue and just decide to use that one I picked next. It may or may not be the best thing to many people, but that's what I usually do in my zoos.

I just do the one's I want in order. Eg: I scroll the animal list until I find one I want, I build an exhibit, then keep scrolling. Of course, I sometimes choose for mixed exhibits or "special zoos" like battlefields and hunting grounds or national parks.

i downloded all the biome packs and use the signs that came with them to make a themed area sometimes
