Reptile & Insect Houses
« on: August 19, 2005, 07:42:29 AM »
I need help with placement of these.  I usually put them in big open spaces of paths; that way guests can see all around.  But they don't look to good that way.  I can't think of any better placement ideas.  Any help?

I always put them near food stands, gift shops, or play areas.  I have also used them to draw people to less popular exhibits, and I use many of them.  While looking at xml files, I noticed that there is a lottery of sorts for both houses that chooses 1 of 3 display setups.  I figure if I place at least 3 of each throughout the zoo, guests are more likely to get to see the 3 reptile displays and all 3 insect displays.  You also should leave enough space all the way around them so that other people can still navigate the path, if the kiosks of busy.  That's my 2 cents worth! :D

I like to use them in places were I don't have fountains or statues. Espacially when the geusts start becoming bored and asking for entertainment. I that adding either the reptile or the insect, Or even them both, helps keep the guests much happier!

They may not look great but they sure keep the little folk happy for a while.  I usually put them in area not too near enclosures and towards the back of my zoo.  This way it will hopefully draw more people to the animals at the back, rather than just collecting near the cheesecake cart, which always happens for some reason  :crazy

Then again, who doesn't like cheesecake  :w00t

. . . . "ahem", getting off topic now  :8

When I'm building with 2 or three paths wide, I like to put them in the cross section - - the middle of the "+".

I also put them by less popular exhibits or in places that aren't near playgrounds.  If I have a lot of space I like to put two crescent shaped flower beds around it, too, that makes it look a little prettier.

I put the insect house where I won't see it too much, I am scared of Spiders so the Spider on the roof freaks me out! I wish there was no Spider.

I put them near less popular exhibits with path all the way around them. I never seem to see many guests actually looking but when I look at their thoughts they say the like them.

Bangles_AU,

You could probably put a zero in for the probability of the spider display in the xml file, so it won't come up at all.  I've never tried altering that, but you could give it a shot.  You would get either the Herc beetles or the Scorpions every time, if it worked.  The file is in entities>objects>buildings>ai>InsectKiosk_df.htm. :)

What are you talking about the kiosks have 3 displays out around them. If you walk around them you can see all three displays. For the "insects" (although only one of those is actually an insect) there are hercules beetle, tarantula, and scorpion. For the reptiles there is a cobra, a chameleon, and a red-eared slider.

Yeah I think I had a glitch, b/c I could see only one display per kiosk for awile, but it isn't doing that now, but that's why I thought that.  Sorry!

I like to make reptile houses. What i do is i make a large exhibit of tall conctre walls cut out 3 parts and add a archway. I then make half the exhibit into a croc exhibit, and half i put down a concrete path down and add sevral reptile and insect houses. Voila! A reptile house(it will be better with the XP reptiles and lacks a roof but i like it)

I put my reptile and insect houses in the middle of food courts, where they get plenty of people watching them. I also put them near the entrance some times. :)
