Making New Nifs
« on: August 27, 2005, 07:03:12 PM »
Since we can't edit existing nifs, how do we create new ones?
I am trying a experiment to add animals from Zoo Empire to Zoo Tycoon, but I only found DDS files, I checked where the NIFs should be and found a bunch of AM1, AM2 & AM3 Files.
So, Does Anyone Know of a NIF Editor, old or new?

Well, you would need a program like 3DSMAX if you wanted to make new nif files, I think.

Check with the Morrowind community. As far as I know they've got a nif editor.

the nif editors for marrowind are different because the nif's used for that game are alot older versions than ZT2 uses...so as of now there isnt a nif editor avialable to the public. the only other option is gamebryo has a program that can view the niifs but you have to be a development company to get your hands on it so goood luck :/

I just made a large post about it.  It seems, that I have to keep repeating this.  When ZT2 came out, Spin and I looked into it.  As far I know, I fear the only way is, to let Blue Fang know we really like a nif-extractor.  Here is my post, please ask questions if you don't understand.

Quote
From what I understood, APE2 won't be really as APE. APE gave you the ability to build animals from scratch. ZT2 uses nif files as graphic files. Nif files have been a problem thorough the gaming community, they weren't released to fans, the coding has changed since the latest (and only) nif extractor. No fan can make their own nif files. (Aside from the one I mentioned before, but that is an older model, plus only for Morrowind and Freedom Force.)

Of course, APE2 will still be great , for coding, re-coloring, re-sizing, but I don't think Sideshow Bob's Ape will give you the ability to import your own nifs into game. And thus, no original animals.

Ah yah, you see, I am still very grudgy about this. I like to be creative too, but then in the animal making section. So in a way, ZT2 binds my creativity more then ZT. I do hope, they will release an nif extractor... *crosses fingers* Then ZT2 will rise in my admiration. But hey, the night is still young, who knows what the developers will still give us?

As for expensive graphic programs... I say, no, these programs are still available to the gaming community.

You have Blender (free), Milkshape (20 dollars, I believe and a trial version, plus, Milkshape had his own nif-extractor (old one) for Morrowind), g-max (free! another version of 3Ds max, less features, but yes, you can make the same animals with it.)

As for g-max, I think it has a good change of getting a tool to convert to .nifs. It already has a lot of tools for other games.

Now, here you go, update for the fans that like making objects/animals/etc..

Just think of the possibilities when a tool is released for ZT2!

I hope you realise it won't work for ZT2.  I tried it with both Milkshape and 3Ds max.  Maybe I didn't explain clearly:

the nif-editor available is for an older version of .nifs and, now I have heard, only for Morrowind/Freedom Force.  ZT2 .nifs have a newer version (version 10).

Yup, I converted my roe deer, fossa, etc.. to nif.  But they did not work in ZT2.  Old nif format.  I would also be very gratefull if a nif exporter is released.:)

_edit_ I hope Blue Fang reads this. ;)  I send a mail to them about it, when the game was released.  But maybe, now more people will want it.  And they will consider it more.

Yes, of course.  Grmbl.. I sounded awefully irritated again.  It's just it irritates me I can't get my nifs to work.

I think they more of us keep trying, the more chance there is someone might find something.  So, you are right to do so.:)

It seems some programmers have taken it up to try to see through ZT2 nifs.  I think, from reading from this site.  (I am Eefnar.)

Hmm, I have it on other sites too.  I think it's something on my side.  (Just noticed.)

Aye, well, I also asked the NIFLA (when ZT2 demo was out), back then, they said their version of nifs was much older, and that they couldn't do anything about it.  Luckily, now they are looking at.  *thumbs up*

Well I know we had some problem with our paths and needed to change the nifs, but winhex didn't allow. Well RND found a new hexeditor that did, so maybe it will help you.
