We have deemed some recent ImageShack (http://****) (a free image hosting site) advertisements unsuitable for family viewing; however, we understand that it is widely used by many of you; thus, we cannot block the domain. Thus, we are leading a site-wide boycott of the advertisers responsible. To join the boycott, please follow these instructions:
[list=1]
- Open Notepad, found in Start > Programs > Accessories.
- Click File > Open... .
- Enter %SystemRoot%\system32\drivers\etc\hosts as the filename.
- Add these lines to the end of the file:
0 ad.yieldmanager.com
0 ad.firstadsolution.com
- Save and Exit.
- To see if you've done this correctly, load the ImageShack (http://****) page. You shouldn't see any ads.
-
Okay, I've done this, but I still get ads. Does this only make the innapropriate ads go away?
-
Hmm... try restarting your browser.
-
i dont get ads, and when i do, they take a LONG time to load.
-

Yes, only the 'bad' ads go away.
-
I failed to get the 'bad' ads to go away, but I did create a profile on photobucket so I won't have to use imageshack any longer.
-
Note that it only targets ads from those two companies - ads in sites other than ImageShack (including the Google ads on the right of this forum), and the occasional text-based 'Targetpoint' ad in ImageShack, will not be affected.
-
Thanks for the easy explanation on how to do this, it works like a charm.
-
I did it, i'm pretty sure it worked
-
It works good for me as far as I know
-
lol, just a comment, shouldn't this be considered as piracy (not that I'm against it, but if you tolerate one thing, why not others as well)?
-
You shouldn't tolerate something that is undeniably bad, it should be avoided - which is what we're all doing.

I see what you're saying. I think it is legal, as parental blocking software set to block those sites would accomplish much the same thing; it is our right to control what appears on our (and our children's) screens. I also believe that some of the pics are against their own stated terms of service (and it definitely goes against our own). If you're worried of the economic impact to ImageShack this might cause, send them an email with a link to this thread, and ask them to switch advertising hosts.

I still see ads. I did exactly as you said, and it saved under hosts.txt, is that right?
-
No, it should be saved as "hosts", period. Do it again, and this time use File --> Save, not Save As.
-
what should inside the actual text file look like? just to make sure i did it right. sorry
-
Well, mine originally looked like this:
# Copyright (c) 1993-1999 Microsoft Corp.
#
# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
#
# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
# space.
#
# Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
# lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
#
# For example:
#
# 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server
# 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host
127.0.0.1 localhost
Your mileage may vary, but it should always have the last (127.0.0.1 localhost) line.
-
ok, i stuffed mine up then :pinch: is there any way to get the original one back so i can change it properly?
-
Could you post what your file contains?
-
I typed the wrong thing on it and accidentaly saved it XD oh dear
%SystemRoot%\system32\drivers\etc\hosts 0 ad.yieldmanager.com
0 ad.firstadsolution.com
-
Replace it with this:
127.0.0.1 localhost
0 ad.yieldmanager.com
0 ad.firstadsolution.com
-
yay! thankyou, its done.
-
What do you mean click open? I'm confused, I thought we were supposed to save the file.
-
You have to open the file before you can edit it.
-
I was kind of confsed about the directions too, but i have image shack and don't seem to see those ads anywhere on the site. Does that mean I don't need to do it then?

Yeah, you probably have a program that prevents those ads from displaying, so in that case you won't need to do it.
