I couldn't really find a topic to actually discuss the new site, so I might as well start one.
In all honesty, It's not as clean as ogresnet, but it's off to a good start.
Way too many smilies though. Way too many.

I agree. Its a little messy right now, but I'm sure it'll get cleaned up in time. Also, the blue skin looks to... general... to me. When I look at it, it doesn't say "Zoo" on it. It just says "general forum"... At least thats what I think. :blush: I think the light brown and light green colors, like the previous skins, were the way to go...
Oh, and would it be possible to get the smilies below the post? Or at least get only the basic ones to show? it takes a while to get to the posting box when you see all those smilies. :)

Do remember that we have -literally- just moved and Yellowrose and Tex have been working very hard indeed on making sure everything was kept intact, so some things will change over the next few weeks so I wouldn't worry about it.

I agree totally with Shen - Yellowrose and Texgnome have worked extremely hard on this move, and I think the new site is great! But it is different, and it will take us all time to get used to it. And as for the smilies - I love this new one! :soccer3:
New features such as 'Warning - while you were typing a new reply has been posted. You may wish to review your post. ' are handy too!

Is it possible to get that thing on the home page that shows what the latest posts are, with the random animal next to it? that thing was helpful. ;)

I think it looks great! True I did get lost at first but the forums are lookin' good!(I would post a thumbsup smilie but I can't find it :huh:) Anyway, great job :specool: I like the new Spell Check feature

umm...i like the new site, especially the new lay, i am just having trouble finding my way around! too many buttons! aaahh! lol...but great job for movin the site sooo quickly!! umm...i think we need to be able to pick what colors we want in our siggy...i can't find the codes to make it different colors! well..I love the new site, it just needs some small adjusments. also, im wondering if we're allowed to have our own custom titles since it is an avaiable option? wanted to ask b4 i did it, cuz on the old zoo admin, we weren't allwed to until like 2000 posts or something.

what do the stars under our username stand for? someone with less posts than me has 1 more star than i do...are they for posts or sumthing else?

I think there are a couple of problems with the PM system at the moment...you can send and receive them, but there are some problems with the PMs carried over from the old forums (though you were advised to back up and delete them before the move).
seaworldgurl1: Yeah, the stars represent the number of posts, much like the Pooper Scooper, Zookeeper etc labels did. :)

@ Shen...so the stars do represent posts, but why does MinGraphics (not trying to be mean, just an exapmle!) have less posts than me, but more stars? this whole star thing is confoosing!! :silver:

Also, we are still adjusting some things about the skin; with it being new software we are all still working on figuring it out. We figured it was more important to get ZA back up and running ratehr than wait for a 100% perfect skin.

Hum, oh I don't know :P I thought they represented posts (as they do on some other forums) but it is entirely possible they represent something else, like length of time on site etc.

I like this site, but the other site was less confusing. I liked the most recent posts thing on the home page , too. umm....are we allowed to have our own custom titles? I saw that the feature was available, and i didn't want to use it cuz i might get in trouble!!

OK smilies are somewhat fixed so there aren't so may on the post window. Still needs some adjustment.
Custom Titles
This will be adjusted as only admins can assign assign custom titles to members. If you have added one it will be removed as this is going to be a special feature for certain membergroups.
Sig Banners
Sig Banners and as I see avatars as well did not transfer properly. The staff will work to reaply the sig banners for members and you will have to reupload your avatar :sorry:
Stars
The stars appear according to your primary membergroup. The member group banners under your names will return when new images for them are completed as the old site ones are far to large for this layout.
Important Note to ALL
Remember we are still making adjustments and it will take time to get to everything done. In the next few weeks we will be very busy as most of us have real lives as well that have to be attended to. We will get it done we just ask your patience.

Well, since this is the first time I've gotten to log in since we have been ' up and running' (darn company!! :wacko:) I just wanted to say the new site looks great! I know we will all be getting used to the new layout and such - but I have rarely - if ever - seen a website move go faster or smoother!

As soon as it is ready, please be patient. :) It may take several days if not weeks to get all the many downloads we have here at ZA back up!

When we've got all of the bugs out of it, etc. We really can't give you a definite answer right now. You'll just have to be patient, I'm afraid.

The old site version of the downloads will be made available by the end of the weekend. :yellowrose:
We will not be taking any new file submissions however until the new downloads manager is tested so we know how it all works. Remember this is just as new to us as it is for you. :woot:
You just have to get used to a few new features you should see the stuff we have to learn and figure out and all without an instruction manual :wallbash:
I know you are all excited and would like everything asap and we are trying, just a little patience on your part to allow us the time to get the rest of the site features working and all in good order.

Yes we seem to have had a problem with the PM's transferring over however deleting them seems to work. And you should be able to clear your PMs yourself. If you look at the bar at the top of your PM box you'll see the words Date, Subject, From and then a small box. Check the box and click Delete Selected. Do the same for your inbox and outbox and your messages will be cleared.

Yes, the staff is working on little icons to replace the stars. They will be ready ASAP.

About the PMs - we know there is problems with them right now but I'm sorry you'll just have to deal with it if Sheltiefan's very clear instructions did not work for you.
About the stars/titles: if you look right under your names, you still have those titles; all of the icons for everything basically are going to be changed though as we get to them. We figured it'd be much better to get the site up and running so that you can all be talking here right now then to smooth out EVERY single bump in the road first. That could have taken a month - did you really want to wait that long? Didn't think so.
About siggy banners: IF you had a banner from a site contest and it is currently missing, we are also working on that.
The one thing that I can't stress enough is patience, but I also encourage you to post any issues with the site that you may have here (after reading through and making sure that your problem hasn't already been addressed, of course). We can't catch everything by ourselves, so you are all a great help in letting us find all of the bugs so they can be squashed.

It's good, but I really miss the old skin. I also just generally liked vBulletin better than SMF board type. But I can live with it. :)
Also, are the downloads up? I see a downloads button! :D

Downloads will not be up till Monday, Feb 12th as we have stated in numerous areas.
And SMF is free; VBulliten you have to pay for.

I really like the new site, but I'm still trying to get used to it instead of the original Zoo Admin site! :blink: I can't wait for it to be totally finished and the downloads to be back up again...

First off, I want to thank everyone for bringing things to our attention. We're working on it, but there is still quite a lot to do. Thanks for your patience & support while we get everything done.
Now a few things I'd like to address.
PM box counts: I do know they're off, however I am not sure what caused it. I am working with the SMF guys to try to correct this.
Downloads Database: This is going to take longer than we thought. For some reason, the files did not transfer over as we'd hoped. We have them all, but as you guys know from last year, uploading approximately 3000 files will take some time.
If you guys have any questions, suggestions, comments, etc. by all means please let us know. Thanks! :sthanks:

Just so some of you are aware we did lose some posts when we did the database moves.
To understand this I will explain a little.
We have databases that hold the site information members, posts, etc. They were all set up here to mirror the ones on the old server. These databases can be backed up like a zip file sort of and downloaded and moved and then restored.
When we did this just as we took the old ZA offline we did lose about 2 hours of posts.
For those of you who say you have lost posts we will look into this and see if we can find why and fix it if at all possible.
Sometimes with a move of a site as large as ZA some things do get lost or don't transfer properly. We will however try to fix what we can.
Again patience is needed on your part as these things take time.

Well I know that there was a poll on the Extinct Animals Expansion that was started at least a few days, maybe a week, before the move that didn't transfer, as well as Marine Maniac's current projects. I know that I had reached 3500 posts because I posted it in Post Count Milestones and was at about 3400 when we got here. I think that these topics that somehow vanished are resulting in some post counts decreasing as well.

Just wanted to say congratulations to Za staff for the clean moving. I only can imagine how much work was involved in this :goodjob:, and the reality is that, aside from some minor details, everything is working fine, and almost everything is here.
As for the new colors and lay-out they are wonderfull, so much pratical than the old one. :clap: :yellowrose:

We are keeping this format of board and the skin is basically almost the way it will be when we're done. The Blue is supposed to be Marine Mania-esque. WE will alter it slightly but don't expect something to be really really different

I'm liking the new board! It will take a while to get used to it, but it's a happy change.
I do have one question, though. I go to my inbox and all of my PMs are displayed on the page, one right after another. Is there someway to keep them from all opening up?

If I may make a suggestion, I think it would look more Marine-mania...ish if it had a darker blue. The blue right now looks like more of an ice blue, rather than a marine-blue. Just my two cents. (is it possible to get that thumbs-up smiley so it shows in the smiley thing above the post box?)

Mikaboshi has a good point there we could be stuckwith no za at all and that would be terriable because :iloveZA: no matter what colour the skin is.

Just to add to what some of you are saying about our new bright blue skin color.
Zoo Admin is an older - one of the oldest ZT fansites on the net. Over the years it has gone through many manifestations.
ZA again has undergone a major maifestation. New owners, new server, new software. With all of this we thought a bright and lively new look would help to bring it into this new age.
For those of you who do not like this bright skin it is possible for you to change the skin you see. This is done through your user profile. When you enter the profile screen you see a few menus located on the left of the screen look in the modify profile menu for Look and Layout Preferences. Click this to change your skin options.
Right at the very top is
Current Theme: Dilber Multicolor (change)
Click on change to see the available skins for use. Once you decide which skin you want too use on the right you will see
use this theme | preview »
Clicking preview will show you what it will look like. Clicking use this theme will make that theme the one you see when accessing the forum board only.
Once you have clicked use this theme you will be taken back to the modify profile screen. Scroll to the bottom and click on Change Profile to make the changes.
I hope this helps those of you who are not fans of our bright new look.

I'm sorry to say this but I don't like the new look either.
During my time as ZA webmaster there were 3 design changes and I agree with you that now's the time for another one.
I even agree with blue. ZA didn't have blue yet and I think with MM2 it would fit just nice.
But not this shade of blue, I'm sorry . It looks too cold and "dead".
Anyway, this is not my call :)
I tried to change the skin option in my profile settings but either I'm too blind to see it or it's really not there.

I share Loewenfrao's and Alpha's opinion. A darker blue would be good. I hope nobody takes my opinion as an insult, I love this place, but that is just my opinion so I hope you don't mind me giving it. I know how hard you all worked to get this working, and I thank you for that. :iloveZA:

I just want to say what an excellent job I think you guys have done on moving the site over and the very smooth transaction which has taken place!
I love the new skin, and hope that everyone appreciates as much as I do what a great job the staff have done.

Try to remember when changing your theme options none of the others have yet been modified they are still as they were when we installed the software. Those changes will come later when we know more on how to do these things with this software. We are still trying to get little things adjusted and then we have the huge task of getting the downloads done so they are again accessable for all of you.

First I would like to say congratulations on the speedy move, and the hard work is appreciated. I'm not one for posting in forums usually. Although I do believe I have downloaded everything that was ever posted on the old site at one time or another and have read most of the topics. I originally had a question to ask but inadvertently just answered it myself, so I will just say that me and my daughter (Jordan) have really come to depend on this site and we appreciate it very much.

Daddyman: Go to Profile at the top of the page, and then on the lefthand side, you will see "Look and Layout Preferences". In there should be a list of check-boxes, and next to one of these it should say "Show most recent posts at the top." To have the oldest messages at the top, UNcheck this box. To make the Newest messages at the top, make sure it has a check in it.
I understand your wish to have this; I myself can't stand seeing the newest reply first either :P
Let me know if this fixes the problem!

Daddyman, I think that this forum as default jumps to the last/newest post on any topic marked "new", but the first page of the topic on any others. Does this help at all?

I agree this does make the site look very new and nice. I do have one question; on the old forum the topics that had new posts would light up, but in this one I noticed that the only way to tell was to see if the thread had the word "today". Is there any other way to tell and is there a way to tell if you have looked at the topic yet, because in the old forum you could tell? I hope you could understand my question.

The topics that have "New Posts" have a little white box next to them that say "New" (inbetwwen page numbers and after the thread title"
Up by your avatar, you can also go to "Show unread posts since last visit (http://www.zooadmin.net/Smf/index.php?action=unread)" And it will tell you everything that has been updated since you were here last.

As to your question, it sounds like the permissions haven't been set correctly yet for members to do that yet. Thanks for pointing this out to us, and hopefully we can get that fixed for you as soon as possible!

Oops I knew I forgot to mention something..
The gallery is temporarily unavaiable due to recent server problems. Once we know everthing is stable and will remain so the gallery will again be made available for everyone.
Sorry but I've had a lot to adjust and overlooked the posting about gallery when I reset it to unavailable.

We all want the downloads to be up and running as soon as we can, and we are working hard to get 3000 downloads all back uploaded to the site. Please be patient and be rest assured that when they are all back up and running, you will for sure know about it.

It's alright. I kinda miss the New Posts option. The thing that would show you all of the topics with new posts. That's mostly how I got around. And you can't search topics anymore. :crying: But the style is pretty cool. Is it going to stay marine themed or will it ever switch to something else? Like how the old site had the elephant, giraffe, gorilla, and crocodile. :unsure:

You can use the Show unread posts since last visit thing at the top by your name and it works pretty much the same way. I continually click it and it gives me whatever threads I haven't seen the latest post in yet.
The old site went through changes throughout its life, and I don't see why now that we are moved it would stay the same forever! :thumbsup:

But I'm coming to like the new theme, but I would really like it if we could get that "Newest post" thing in the center of the screen like it used to be, surrounded by a big open space, with maybe marine animals next to it where the land animals used to be on the old skin. I know the new post thing is at the side of the page, but it seems a lot less cluttered if its in the middle surroudned by an open space. I know you guys are focusing on getting the downloads in, but perhaps sometime afterwards? :D

Well, sticking with the current design. It could have the bottlenose dolphin, the orca, hammerhead shark, and whale shark. The orca is like the elephant cause its big, the dolphin and giraffe are alike because they are both popular zoo animals, the hammerhead is like the Nile croc, and the whale shark is like the gorilla because they are both gentle giants.

Um, I can't edit snakey's color in my sig, because it doesn't display all the colors he has. In fact, it doesn't show anything in my signature editor panel after the first half of snakey... :wacko:

I'm glad you are happy we are up as much as we are! I have merged your topic with a current thread that meets the purpose though; if we all made new topics to say how excited we are we'd have so many threads about the same thing that'd we'd all go even more insane than we already are!

I'm already pretty sure I know the answer to this question, because ZAdmin has always been top quality (from my standpoint, anyway), but once the downloads are up and available again, will you have the same system of organizing them by categories (ie: ZT1, ZT2, Buildings, Objects, Maps, Animals, Packs, Hacks & Utilities)? That is SO helpful! I look forward to the upcoming fully-functional site. You guys are doing an awesome job of moving a mountain!

Sorry to be a complete pain in the neck, but could I please ask this question again?! :blush: Before the site went down, Yellowrose said we could amend the colour/style that we view by going into look and layout. But this is what I have when I go in there.

Sorry that was when the site was on the old server. The look and layout now is the forum default. You can not choose any other theme for a look as it causes errors to the boards.
The forum software itself comes with limited functions and to add extra functions for both members and for staff we have to add mods or alterations. These alterations alter code in the files that make the site run.
These alterations are only made to the default files not all the other theme files. So for everyone to be able to have the functions that have been added we have to stay with the default theme.

I think to make this site even better is to let each other get to know each other by talking right.
So I was thinking if it was possible that the makers of this website could add a program like msn messenger or yahoo messenger. So people just log in like usual and then they could click the messenger and then a chat room appears up and they could talk to other people live about stuff and get to know each other more.
I was just thinking about that while eating breakfast so I don't know if its possible or nessasary.

I have merged your suggestion with an area everyone is already using to talk about the new site, suggestions, etc.
The problem with having live based chat is that it would make it much harder for us to keep it family safe. Whereas with forum posts we can delete or edit bad posting quickly, we would not be able to with live chat. This would make it difficult to tell parents that their children are safe browsing our forums with this feature. We have members as young as 3 here and wouldn't want them exposed to a few bad eggs or have a parent upset with us.

Ya I thought about that, ya I tottaly agree with you. Amazingly there are kids as small as 3 that love this site and if we did have chat you never know when someones not thinking right and posts something stupid.

I think this website should post the Zoo Tycoon 1 and 2 demo's and even allow people to buy the games some how of this website.

What purpose would it serve for ZA to host the demos when they are already free for download at the official ZT site? Purchasing the games off of ZA would also require a lot of work on the part of the staff because they would have to contact Microsoft about supplying the games and then finding a method for people to buy the games.

also can you please put an area for each download(ZT2 specifically) saying what expansion packs they need to work or just what expansions each download can run 100% with installed such as say there is a download for a spotted seal can could you put maybee

because i would like to know what downloads will work for me and what ones i should download or remove from game

We do not have a vendor liscense to distribute Microsoft products nor do we have any intention of requiring one.
We are in the process right now of getting all of the downloads transferred. In the future please read the front page and stickies, or use the search feature, as this has been stated numerous times.
The staff does not put the descriptions on files, the creator does. In the past it was not required to put which XP the download worked with because most people generally assume that you know that if the animal came with ES, it will work with ES, etc. Basically whatever model that animal is from, you need to have that game in order for it to run. When we are ready to accept download submissions again, it will be required for creators to put this information in.

Okay. Fennec fox is from ES. So any animal made from it you must have ES to have it work.
Ethopian Wolf is from AA. Any animal made from it will work as long as you have AA.
Orca is from MM2 so you must have MM2 for any animal made from it to work.
In almost all situations the animal will work with the expansion it came with and ALL others after that. The exception is, any animal that was made from a ZT2 original HAS to be updated for ES at a minimum or it won't work. An example is the Liger; it will only work correctly if you have no XPs.
The staff will not be updating the old download descriptions to state this kind of thing as we do not write them and many of the creators have moved on and we would not have the rights to edit the info ourselves.

Tazzie a lot of the designers have updated their ealier files to work with the XPs and most have included what XP is needed but there are some that did not include that information so using Mika's examples will help you if that information is not included.
Like Mika mentioned a lot of the designers have either retired from designing or have moved on to either real life commitments or other interests and the designers we have now would need their permission to alter their original files to make them compatable.
You never know though we have had some old faces returning to the site and maybe some day some of these designers will return and give their permission but until then we just have to be happy with what we can currently use.
