the other string id thread has been closed and will be better organized and kept as a record only. Any questions you may have about string id's or reservations can be posted here.

Are you guys still using a topic to manage string ids?

I think it might be easier if there was some kind of database set up for it no?

Then you could display lists of unused ids, check an id if it's used or not.. etc

Hi flamethrower
A lot has changed since you left as we ran out of usable ids and Jay (ZKL)went through everything and found new sets for use.
Also since these was confusion as to sets so we now have the availble ones listed in blocks.
http://zoo.ogresnet.com/forums/showthread.php?t=4900

You make you block request in this thread and YR edits it in.
More will be listed as needed.
And no I did not write it but I posted it both here and zkl so that I would be able to edit it if the others were not available to.
Any questions contact Yellowrose or Jay.

Ah ok.  Thanks for the update.

I was suggesting keeping the ids stored in a database (such as mySQL) where people can then filter unused/used ids etc.  I can help set one up, but I'm not sure how active building design still is.

There is a difference between a used/unused list and a reserved/available list. In the old string id topic, both types of lists were in there to some extent. Although a number of people did not have problems understanding the difference, there was also a number of people that were confused. Anyone designing buildings does not need to know anything except what is the next available block. So the current approach is simply that: show the next few available blocks. The blocks that have been reserved are still shown. But to reduce the confusion further, the reservations in the current range is in a separate topic than those that were in the previous range. There is still a list that contains what has been used, including those used by Blue Fang. This list has two purposes. One is to know what range to use next once the current range is completely reserved. The other is for possible reuse of messages, in order to minimize how fast ids are used up. However, there are situations where a message cannot be reused, even if it looks like it is exactly the same. At some point those messages should be separated out so people will know which messages can safely be reused, and under what circumstances.

Even though building design is not occurring at the rate it once was, it is still occurring.

Also since your departure there has been a new Download Directory made.
A lot of the downloads are already listed there although we are still working on it as there are a lot more to list.

I have not designed anything in the past, but am trying to put together something as we speak.  May I please reserve the following blocks?

Blocks 182, 2057, 3619-3620
IDs 2896-2911, 32896-32911, 57896-57911

If it would happen that my would-be creations would fail, I will kindly unreserve these blocks.

Thanks, Cricket
