Could someone please suggest to me a free and easy/intermediate graphics program I could use for creating animals and objects in ZT1?

i use Coral Paint shop pro X, just look that up on the internet and you should find it.:wink:

for regular objects, you can use... Paint! (not joking, lots of people use fancy programs and have worse results than I did)

90% of everything I have made was done in paint.  I am being completely serious.  Paint is excellent.  It's not good for recolors so much, but it can be used to create some amazing things!

I use Microsoft Paint and Pint Master 12 together. Printmaster, I use to recolor and paint is for background and small designing
 I think there is an article on making buildings.

It's easy really.  You just draw the 4 rotations and save each seperately.  I can't really explain it all here.  But it is very very simple to do actually.  At least it was for me...once I got the hang of it that is.
