When I assign Zookeepers, I always put a little water in the exhibit, blocking the door, so then my zookeepers will always be there. If I don't put the water there, the zookeepers go and the animals get pretty angry, pretty quickly.

That wouldn't work; if the zookeepers can't go out, they'll just 'monitor the zoo' indefinitely inside the exhibit until you pick them up and put them down again.

The zookeepers won't do anything if they can't get out. If you don't want your zoo keepers wandering all over, the best way is the let them get out for one square, but have it so they can't go anywhere by blocking every way with hedges, flowers, or whatever.

I orginally heard this from someone else here on the forums, but maybe it was in the ZT2 thread...similar to what you guys said...but I just started created a 2 or 3 square "side enclosure" next to my exhibits and put a bench in it and assign my zookeepers to that exhibit as well.

Yes I do this all the time and it works great! I hate when they wonder all over so I make sure I assign the zookeepers to the exhibit I blocked them into! You can view a topic I posted a screenshot in to show you how I did it  :D Keeping the ZooKeepers

In the early stages of a game, one zoo keeper can take care of 3 or 4 exhibits, if they are close together. As the game progresses, and the animals have babies, there are more animals, therefore more feeding, therefore more poo, & each exhibit will require more attention. Usually one keeper can still handle two 100-square exhibits. When you get into the larger, multi-species exhibits, you may need to have more than one keeper per exhibit. They still need to be able to exit the exhibit, or they will just stand there going "duh".

To give your keepers a little help, try Loewenfrau's Clean Up Hack. You can manually delete poo, and get $64 instead of the $50 from the compost heap. (And you can buy a nice Parliament CD for that extree $14.) But be careful. I find that if you delete a poo that a keeper was about to clean up, the keeper sometimes goes into a trance and does nothing until you pick the keeper up again.

How do you delete poo? I've tried using the bulldozer icon. It doesn't work!

You can't. Either have a zoo keeper or scientist clean it up. However, there is a cheat that you can use. Name an exhibit Coprolite Corner and all the poo will turn to rocks which you can then delete.

Install the hack, and use the bulldozer icon like normal.

Loewenfrau's Clean Up Hack

"This file contains modified AI files for trash, animal & dinosaur poo and food. If you ever have trouble with staff not cleaning your zoo up or you just want to beat them to it then this file is for you! It allows you delete any of the above items and for trash and poo you even get some money back! This file is a ZTD file and so can be downloaded directly into your Zoo Tycoon\Updates folder. "

it is simple to do and have them work normally the key to it is this for me is to remember that
all zoo keepers  look for the center of the longest fence  and that is where they expect to find the gate.  and it is always facing the center of the zoo.
