That's the only overhead shot I have at the moment - next time the snow leopards and the lions!

For now, hoping you all remembered your mother's yesterday:

Thanks all! Mothers Day in the UK was last sunday, I must admit I didn't know it was different in the US  :blush
I got sick of not being able to see the variant skins so finally got myself a top notch computer, no regrets! :P

Just realised I forgot the first thing you see in the zoo - the entrance:

Here's an overhead of the snow leopards exhibit - you can see a bit of the lion enclosure as well:

And here are the lions! I don't usually have them but I really wanted to try out the cat climber and see what it was like:

You may have noticed the staff training area in teh middle, this is just something I'm experimenting with to see if it helps them do their job any better...
The results? Well my next post should answer that :P

And here's the tiger exhibit as seen from the guests point of view. I messed this one up a bit, made it too small. Whenever they have cubs I have to get rid of the father and one of the cubs :sad
(http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h75/alloy61/guestviewtigers.jpg)
I wanted to try out the pit idea, but the tigers kept falling in! :><  Hence the post and rope fence...

Here are my further experiments with the staff centers - this time I intially tried to set it up on a raised platform to give the animals more space, but had trouble putting fences around it:
Any improvement from the staff? Not really - I regularly have to clean up the red panda exhibit

Next time to creatures that enjoy the water!

I think for my next experiment shall be with the elevated paths, I've a few cunning plans yet...

I like your exhibits ,they are all quite good. But maybe you could try using some more foliage (maybe biome brush ?) or some more water or rocks, at the moment, they aren't really that much it (except the ones with the moats and that crocodile one, those were amazing).
You could also try making exhibits bigger or making mixed ones.
This is no offense, just constructive critisism. Your zoos are not bad.
That foodcourt was great.

Don't worry - no offense taken! I'm always trying to find ways to make the zoo more appealing to the eye.

Here's a snippet of the next zoo, although I'm not finished yet, it's part of my rainforest sky tram circuit:

This was my first attempt to get the elevated path to meet the top level of a plateau exactly - unfortunately it didn't work, the only way I could manage it is to go slightly above the path and then back down - if anyone know's how to do it then please let me know:

However the experiment remained a complete success - both pairs of pandas had daughters as you can see:

Oddly enough my giraffes regularly escaped into the panda enclosure, and the biome suitability stayed in the green? The fence was complete, I wonder if it was a glitch, or whether the fact I used a pit for most fo the fence allowed it to 'detect' the neighbouring exhibit and classed it as ok?

That's all for now, more to follow later in the week as you visit the zoo's final exhibits  :penguin

Oh don't get me started on animals escaping through intact fences! :angry  In my current zoo its the flamingoes' favourite trick, but all sorts of creatures do it at some point or other. :blink I think its just a glitch, so theres probably nothing we can do about it. Dont know why it still accepted the new biome though. My escapees usually get into guest areas.

Great pics again, alloy :wtg

Koalas are very shy creatures. They are also very picky eaters. Do you have eucalyptus in ES? I don't have it, so I don't know. Look in the zoopedia and you'll find out why they're like that.

Thanks Rosina and Koala King!

Yes the Koalas have Eucalyptus in ES - here's one eating out of an elevated food table:

They also have it in a bowl or a pile on the floor. There is a Sydney Blue Gum Tree too, though I don't know if they can eat the leaves off of it

Hello all! the next zoo is now finished! There seems to be an African theme going round the show and tells at the moment, and it seems I've also succumbed!
Presenting:

The African Safari Zoo!

The first gate through the jeep tour leads into a monster savannah exhibit, so big I could only capture it in 2 screenshots

I can try and put it up for download if you want - I'll need to look up how to do that!
I warn you though it's only 2 stars (you could increase it by adding an elevated path circuit going round I expect) and I regularly had to fish animals out of the water (the Gazelle found the elephant swimming pool irresistable!)

I must say, I downloaded your zoo, and actually went through the entire jeep tour. Does that give you an idea of what I think about it?

Finished! The Mountain Sky Tram is done, and there are Ibexes in there too! I've experimented with several different styles of exhibits here, some more popular with the guests than others - it's a five star zoo, and the sky tram is 3 and a half to four stars (depending which station you're at!)

Unfortunately though, I've an early start tomorrow so you'll have to wait for the pics!
Until next time... :Wave

Hey! Where are our pictures? Come back and show us your unbelievable zoos!

You're almost as good as Zoohio.

PS:: I was just wondering if someone with ES would be nice enough to try something for me: to put a sequoia down, and then have a elevated path spiral up around it? Just thought it might look cool.... yeah.

@zoo_tycoon2 - I think the reflective water is just graphics card related, I don't know if it's an ES feature, I've only recently been able to see it myself having upgraded
@tailchaser - I can try the sequoia thing in my next zoo if you like, that'll probably be a week or two away

The escaped ibex was replaced into his exhibit...again I didn't get any error message saying 'biome is unsuitable' and the ibex was perfectly happy according to it's status. Must have slipped with the biome brush somewhere?

I think I can do that - so far there's only one niggling issue where an animal regularly complains about it's biome, although that's something to do with the exhibit design (you'll see later, don't want to reveal it just yet!)
There's around 7 more exhibits to run through yet - perhaps the directory will be fixed by then?

There are also numerous binoculars, enabling a good view of all the exhibits around the mountain. You take a quick peep at the shetland pony ride, but see no-one riding...

I find using the tool next to the level terrain button helps for hills - it stops them from getting too steep for the animals but keeps it looking nice. I've seen the penguins sliding on them (I think so anyway, I'm never sure if they are just diving into the water only a hill's in the way :crazy ), reminded me of the animal winter olympics they showed on the BBC

Anything particular you want to see in the next zoo? Whether it's a certain animal or exhibit style, landscaping - that kind of thing.

I'm thinking of doing a challenge zoo next time, perhaps posting the results so if anyone needs help doing a photo challenge they can look here!

Hello again - sorry it's been a while!
The next zoo venture isn't quite finished yet, I've still got a ways to go yet...

Here's a sneak-peek though, it contains the tree and elevated path you wanted to see Tailchaser!
For some reason it created a floating path section but the guests seem to love it!

That actually worked! Once I fiddled with the angle I could select that bit only - I chose to delete it as opposed to putting a statue on it, as floating bits of masonry would creep me out a bit, let alone the guests!

I can't see the picture very clearly but this is a question, did you use ES in this zoo?
Title: Alloy61 Zoos
Post by: alloy61 on May 13, 2006, 07:06:03 AM
@Rosina - I'll see what I can do!
@kiwah - yes ES was used in this zoo

The 3rd animal was a Wolverine (you can see the boreal den behind the bear lying down). Unforunately I had to ship them out when they escaped onto the elevated path :pinch:
The resulting chaos caused several guests to fall into the exhibit, making the zookeepers tranquilize all the bears and two of the moose before I evicted the unwanted guests
At first I figured a fluke but when it happened again a few minutes later they had to go :(

You decide to head around to the other side of the exhibit where a pair of binoculars may help you spy them out
On the way there you take a quick peek at the Insect house, and jump as a spider leaps at the glass:

Post by: alloy61 on May 14, 2006, 01:35:24 AM
Before leaving you stop off at the gift shop, where you buy:
A zoo guide (for the memories, shame you didn't think of it before you toured the zoo!)
On the back is the Zoo Map:

Title: Mother's Day Card
Post by: alloy61 on May 14, 2006, 01:39:42 AM
You also buy a Mother's Day Card, opting for the less traditional choice:

"This Mother's Day there will be no need to snap at the kids..."

And that's the Crocodile River Zoo!
Someone told me we are able to upload zoos again so I've just submitted the Sky Mountain Zoo!

A word of advice (in case you don't know) - place the browse holders quite far away from the walls! To begin with I didn't and one of the elephants got stuck, became very angry (naturally) and knocked it's way out of the exhibit!

Thanks everyone for the nice comments,

@supremeruler - zootycoon2 is right, the water detail settings need to be on high, although it won't work with some graphics cards
@nique - feel free to try the designs out, keeps me thinking of new lay-outs!

Unfortunately my 3 year old recently figured out how to operate the DVD drive and started playing ZT2 - in his excitement he deleted my Octagon zoo... not his fault though, shows he's paying attention:monkeyrol

I do still have the zoo map pic though - here (http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h75/alloy61/zoomapoctagonzoo.jpg), I always take that pic first before any others.

Hmmm... what to do next....I shall be in my labs! :surfing:

oh, and i have an awesome video card, so my water turned out shweet. thanks everyone! and what a coinsodence, i made an octagon zoo, but it was different. i divide the map up into eight biomes-boreal, temperate, scrub, savannahh, wetlands, tundra, dessert, rainforest. no grassland or alpine because i didnt have AA, so not enough animals. at the center is a staff center, and the keppers can get to all exhibits, but not out of the octagon(aquabats rule!).

please note i didnt copy you, i just didnt know.

that sounds cool supremeruler77...

mine is on a small (grass) map, i made the 4 corners into 5 exhibits...
-wetlands (hippos, crocs)
-jungle 1 (gorillas, chimps)
-jungle 2 (tigers)
-temp. forest (pandas, red pandas)
then, i still need to do savannah (elephants, giraffes, zebras)

Then, the grand finalie (sp?)
a HUGE asian elephant exhibit in the center!!!

wow, so much, off to my own thread:laughing:

Hmm - never considered that way before!

What I do is use the 'print screen' button, it's usually near to the scroll lock on the keyboard. This will copy the screen you have in front of you on the monitor.
Then I'll open up a photo editor and create a new window (usually Ctrl+N) and Paste (Ctrl+V or use the menu at the top). In most photo editor programs there's a resize tool, so I'll then resize the photo so it fits into the 400 x 400 size limit for posting.

The last few photos I took here were actually taken from the sky tram as it moved to the central area.

Greetings All! The next zoo is complete - here's a little taster - the desert food court:

I need to do a little population control first though, as you can see from these fennecs, I started with four in the exhibit (2 male, 2 female) and 2 years on they're up to Fennec Fox 98...:pinch:

The zoo itself is split into several biome sections, desert, savannah, grassland, scrub, tropical rainforest, wetlands, alpine and temperate forest.
I'll take you on the reccomended route and start with the desert.....next time. As I said, those foxes need to be released to the wild, even with 3 zookeepers in the exhibit they just can't keep up!
Till next time!
Title: Hesketh Zoo

We will be taking the reccomended route through the zoo, so please take a right at the gift shop and enter the African Desert Zone:

Shortly through here you may want to grab a bite to eat or use the facilities before proceeding on to look at the animals:

The first exhibit you will see contains the African Spurred Tortoises:

These creatures are becoming more and more common as household pets, unfortunately though few people understand the specific dietary requirements, and many underestimate the power they can exert if they want to get through a barrier!

Post by: alloy61 on July 09, 2006, 04:07:33 AM
Here we come to the Scimitar Horned Oryx and Dromedary Camels. Sadly this is a new breeding pair of Oryx, as our originals recently passed away. They bred successfully however and we released 2 offspring back into the wild.

Did you know? - The dromedary camel is capable of drinking 100 L (30 gal.) of water in just 10 minutes.

Title: Fennec Foxes
Post by: alloy61 on July 09, 2006, 04:12:30 AM
If you proceed down this path you will see the Fennec Foxes on your left
(http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h75/alloy61/HeskethDesertTunnel.jpg)

We have recently vastly reduced our numbers of these in the zoo, they were becoming very difficult to manage. 18 were passed out to other zoos for breeding purposes and 26 were released back into the wild. This still leaves us with 9 Fennec Foxes here.
The may be difficult to manage but one look into those big eyes and you could just melt:

To your right are the Striped Hyenas

The first exhibit we can see here is for the Gerenuks - if you like you can proceed under the viewing canopy for a much closer look
(http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h75/alloy61/HeskethGerenukexhibit.jpg)

This is one of our most recent births - the fawn tries to stand on two legs from the age of two weeks, but usually takes around a month to get the hang of it.

Just across from the gift shop are the Caracals
(http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h75/alloy61/HeskethCaracalExhibit.jpg)

The solitary caracal pairs only when ready to breed. Typically they will give birth to a litter of two or three young. After two months, the kittens begin to eat solid food, but stay close to their mother’s side for another 10 months.

Title: Aardvarks
Post by: alloy61 on July 10, 2006, 10:28:03 PM

Blind and hairless at birth the young Aardvark is born in a maternity den where it stays alone, with the mother returning from time to time to nurse it. After two to three months the youngster may accompany the mother on her nightly forages and at six months old the youngster can dig for itself.

Now some of you may have seen the news articles about Terrance, the Terror of Hesketh Zoo?
This photo here shows an example of how to act with an escaped animal, and how not to act.

As you can see the little boy is running directly towards the animal, arms outstretched ready to hug the animal.
The man on the right is doing the correct thing, albeit a bit dramarically - stay well away from the meerkats, they may look small and cute, but they are wild animals.

In case you were wondering, Terrance has now been released into the wild

Feels like you're being watched doesn't it?

Title: Rest Stop
Post by: alloy61 on July 10, 2006, 10:46:14 PM
Those of you who are just bursting at the seams can take a rest break here, and enjoy the calming effects of the fountain

(Good Morning Rebecca! Glad you like the pics!)
Title: White Rhinoceros
Post by: alloy61 on July 10, 2006, 10:52:18 PM
And here we arrive at the last exhibit of the scrub section
(http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h75/alloy61/HeskethWhiteRhinoExhibit.jpg)

It is widely believed that the white rhino take their name from the Afrikaans word for wide-lipped. Due to the nuchal hump the white rhino is one of the few animals unable to swim.
Title: Alpine Section
Post by: alloy61 on July 10, 2006, 10:54:27 PM
Now if you proceed down this twisty path you will enter the Alpine Biome Section

Title: Gelada and Ethiopian Wolf
Post by: alloy61 on July 10, 2006, 11:07:50 PM
The diet of the Geladas depends on seasonal availability, but consists largely of grasses, with the blades, seeds and bulbs all being eaten. Grasses are picked by rapid, dextrous hand movements as the gelada sits and shuffles along the ground, but the species is also known to eat fruit, flowers, leaves, insects and even small mammals!

There are fewer than 500 of the Ethipian Wolf left in the wild, and there are no records of them ever having bred in captivity. Naturally we hope to amend this record!

Title: Forest Section - Barbary Macacques
Post by: alloy61 on July 12, 2006, 12:49:17 PM
Thanks!
The Elevated path combined with our binoculars allows you to get a really close look at these animals - The Barbary Macacques, also known as the Barbary Ape.

The males within a troop protect all the offspring, even if it is not their own.
Title: Mountain Gorillas
Post by: alloy61 on July 12, 2006, 12:52:37 PM
The next exhibit we come to is that of the Mountain Gorilla:

The gorilla is shy and retiring rather than ferocious and treacherous. It usually seeks no trouble unless harassed but will valiantly defend its family group if threatened.
Title: Okapi
Post by: alloy61 on July 12, 2006, 12:58:40 PM
If you look down here on your right you will see the Okapis
(http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h75/alloy61/HeskethOkapiExhibit.jpg)

In its native habitat the okapi is wary and elusive:its acute hearing provides early warning of danger, and its effective camouflage enables it to move about in the wild undetected by man. Most of our knowledge about the okapi has been learned by observing it in zoos.
Title: Pygmy Hippopotamus
Post by: alloy61 on July 12, 2006, 01:07:08 PM
Looking over to your left you can see the Pygmy Hippos
(http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h75/alloy61/HeskethPygmyHippoExhibit.jpg)

The Pygmy Hippopotamus toes are more widely spread and have little inter-digit webbing, giving pygmy hippopotamuses more secure footing on land. They are still very able swimmers though.
Title: Chimpanzees
Post by: alloy61 on July 12, 2006, 01:09:28 PM
Here is one of our more popular exhibits - the Chimpanzees
(http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h75/alloy61/HeskethChimpanzeeExhibit.jpg)

Chimps sometimes chew leaves to make them absorbent and then use them as a sponge, dipping them in water and sucking out the moisture.
Title: Mandrills
Post by: alloy61 on July 12, 2006, 01:15:15 PM
I here you can see the largest of the monkeys - the Mandrills
(http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h75/alloy61/HeskethMandrillExhibit.jpg)

Breeding these animals is important for the survival of the species, in the wild their numbers have been drastically cut due to hunting for their meat.
Title: Bongos
Post by: alloy61 on July 12, 2006, 01:19:46 PM
From the largest monkey to the largest forest antelope - the Bongo
(http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h75/alloy61/HeskethBongoExhibit.jpg)

Many of the African natives believe if they eat or touch bongo they will have spasms similar to epileptic seizures. Because of this superstition, bongos have been relatively unharmed in their native ranges.
Title: Black Leopard
Post by: alloy61 on July 12, 2006, 01:25:30 PM
And here we come to the final exhibit of the forest section - our Black Leopards
(http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h75/alloy61/HeskethBlackLeopardExhibit.jpg)

I imagine you will have noticed the cats newest toy, and I can assure you they love it!

Title: Time for a rest
Post by: alloy61 on July 12, 2006, 01:29:21 PM
Now I imagine you must be hungry - we'll have a stop here where you can enjoy a wide variety of food and drink. You may want to let the kids loose on the play area as well...

I realise you all must be a bit tired from that walking now, so here's some good news. Our next section is entirely visible through the skytram, so you can relax and enjoy the ride.

Title: Wetlands Sky Tour!
Post by: alloy61 on July 27, 2006, 06:02:45 AM
Thanks World

Sorry it's been so long since the last update, real life warranted more attention for a bit

Welcome to the Wetlands Sky Tour! The first area you pass over belongs to the Nile Monitors:

The Adult Nile Monitors can easily outrun people over short distances, even over open ground and will usually head for water when pursued.
Title: Wetlands Sky Tour - Nile Hippoptamus
Post by: alloy61 on July 27, 2006, 06:06:15 AM
The next area we pass over is for the Nile Hippopotamus
(http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h75/alloy61/HeskethHippoExhibit.jpg)

Adult hippos can stay underwater for up to five minutes. Sleeping hippopotamuses can rise to the water's surface to breathe.
Title: Wetlands Sky Tour - Nile Crocodiles
Post by: alloy61 on July 27, 2006, 06:10:13 AM
You may want to lift your legs up here if you're particularly tall, the sky tram gets awfully close to the water...

If baby crocodiles are in danger, the adult female may pick them up and flip them into her mouth or gular (throat) pouch for protection.
Title: Wetlands Sky Tour

The horns of the African buffalo are an excellent indication of age and gender. The females and young males do not have the hard shielding that protects the base of the skull in large adult males.

You are welcome to ride the sky tram tour back again, it runs back along the same path.

Hope you enjoyed that brief rest from walking!

If you head down this path you will find yourself back inside the scrub zone!

Our next area is one of the smaller sections - Our African Grassland Area.
Title: Grassland - Secretary Bird
Post by: alloy61 on July 27, 2006, 06:20:54 AM
Looking over this area here you can see the Secretary Birds:

The parents take turns incubating the egg while the other goes off to feed.
Title: Grassland - Ratel
Post by: alloy61 on July 27, 2006, 06:25:52 AM
Here we come across the Ratel, also known as the Honey Badger:

In the wild the Ratel has got a very fascinating relationship with the Black-throated Honeyguide. These two animals help each other. When a honeyguide finds a bee-nest it makes a specific sound which attracts ratels in that area. Consequently, the ratel protected by its fur destroys the nest and feeds on honey and a honeyguide can easily enjoy eating the wax in the honeycomb.

(NB - for those having problems with neighbouring exhibits complaining of the smell, if you look above you will see the wall of trees, this is actually in a separated enclosure between the exhibits, and has stopped the secretary birds complaining of the smell. Alternatively you could use benches for zoo staff)
Title: Hesketh Playground
Post by: alloy61 on July 27, 2006, 06:29:32 AM
Time for the kids to use up the last of their energy on this playground, that is it for the walking now
(http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h75/alloy61/HeskethPark.jpg)

Here is another scrap of map for the area we just visited:
Title: Next Time...
Post by: alloy61 on July 27, 2006, 06:32:11 AM
If you will walk this way you will find the means to an incredibly close view of the animals:

If you don't fancy getting that close, then you can use these binoculars:

But then what will you be looking at?

:badgnome: Until next time...

Title: Savannah Jeep tour!
Post by: alloy61 on August 05, 2006, 02:26:43 PM
Thankyou very much all for the nice comments! :IloveZA:

The first animal on the jeep tour you see (conveniently blocking the path!) is the warthog - although they look fierce, the majority ofwarthogs would rather run than fight. However they can be fierce opponents if forced.

And here you can see the wildebeest - to groom itself, the wildebeest rubs its face either on the ground or against a tree or partner (in this case he seems to be using the jeep!)
Title: Spooky goings on

Here is a common guest favourite - the lions! Keep those windows wound up won't you?

Studies show that the majority of lion hunts fail - on average around 1 in 6 succeed. However studies also show the lion needs only 10-20 animals per year to keep going

Title: Hesketh Giraffes
Post by: alloy61 on August 05, 2006, 02:42:04 PM
I'm sure you'll have seen their heads from the neighbouring exhibit - the graceful giraffe
(http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h75/alloy61/Heskethgiraffeexhibit.jpg)

We have 2 kinds of giraffe in here - the Masai and the Reticulated. Giraffes are often called the watchtowers of the Serengeti, keeping track of predators. They are also one of the few mammals able to see in colour.

The horn is not a 'true' horn that is attached to the skull. It actually grows from the skin and is made up of keratin fibers, the same material found in hair and nails.

Phew did I let it get dusty in here....:whistling

Better late than never I suppose : :) :

Welcome to Skaro Zoo!

I've been experimenting a bit with mixed biome exhibits, trying to see what I can get to blend well - this exhibit is a bit poka-dotty but I like it : :P :

The secretary birds are happy in it, there are around 20 in here at the mo

How about a few spot facts?
Florida panthers eat white tailed deer, wild hogs, rabbits, armadillo, and birds.

Breeding these animals is especially important, as there are believed to be between 30-50 panthers left in the wild.

And that was the scrub section, short and sweet!
On the way across to the desert area you come across these magnificent beasts:

Scientists are actually know trying to get a 'chemical fingerprint' of the rhino horn as a step towards eradicating poaching - in other words if they find a horn on the black market they could figure out where it came from...

As promised we now enter the desert:

I was so glad when I found out that Ostriches were compatible with desert, though I've yet to see one bury it's head in the sand lol

Moving on from the camels and ostriches, as you can see these spurred tortoises are thriving, when these young hatch I'll probably have to adopt some of them out to stop overcrowding...

Separated from the tortoises by a large cliff is...

The Fennec Foxes! Cute as ever, I couldn't resist this family photo

The next exhibit we come onto is a desert oasis

The Addax and the Oryx get on famously, these two even appear to be sharing a moment

If you like I can put this zoo up for download
You may want to see the rest of it first though... : :P :
Onto the last two exhibits!

The first is a large cheetah enclosure
(http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h75/alloy61/dwzcheetahexhibit.jpg)

At first you only see them in the distance, only to have one creep out of the bushes in front of you...

The Galapagos Tortoises do enjoy getting a tan...

Alloy61, your zoos are AMAZING! I'm trying to think of something bad to say about them, but I can't find it! Your zoos are fantastic. Wait, no, fabulous. Hold on, they're better than that... they're FANTABULOUS! I don't like doctor who, but that map made me chuckle. I'm like "Arrrgh! A dalek's attacking skaro zoo... RUN!" :slol: Do you mind if I 'borrow' that idea?
Title: Re: Alloy61 Zoos
Post by: alloy61 on April 07, 2007, 02:51:58 AM
Borrow away lol

Incidentally, Skaro is the name of the Dalek's home planet lol - see the clue was there all along hehe

this zoo is looking really good!
a tip for mixed biome exhibits--after you place trees/shrubs of a different biome, go back and paint more of the ground biome (not the level where there's shrubs, but like grass or something).  This lets you keep the trees but gets rid of the polka dots.
can't wait for more
Title: Re: Alloy61 Zoos
Post by: alloy61 on April 07, 2007, 12:37:16 PM
ah but the polka dots were on purpose lol - they were to add to the overall effect of the dalek

I even put fences round them before hand to make sure they were all the same shape :P
