Title: Mika's Trip to Africa
Post by: mikaboshi on June 26, 2006, 08:51:47 PM
Alright, I've just been dazzled by the amount of creativity on ZA, and finally thought that maybe I should give this whole thing a shot. Join me as I take a trip around Africa, exploring the savannah, the deserts and the jungles.

After 2 years of saving my money from jobs I've done during the summer, finally I discover I have enough money to make the trip of a lifetime: a full round trip tour of one of the most exciting continents on the Earth: Africa! After a week of final preparations, I board the first of two planes, and am on my way! I sleep for the majority of the ride; all of the excitement kept me up most of the night. I arrive in a small African city at about 5 pm. There, I board a small plane that will take me to my first true destination: a small village on the savannah. I arrive close to sundown, and am greeted by the villagers.

They hurry me inside the protective fencing surrounding their huts. I am seated by the fire in the center on a log, and given a large hunk of meat.

This village is small; I find that its main purpose, really, is to hunt for a larger village to the north, in the jungle. That explains for me why there is an abundance of men and only a few women. No children are present. There is, however, an African Wild Dog female here. One man, who calls himself Hazkia, tells me that her name is Adebanke, which in their language means "God is taking care of her." They gave her this name because she was found on a hunting party 3 years ago, snuggling the body of her mother, who had been badly wounded in a fight with some hyenas who were trying to get to her pups. The only pup that had survived was Adebanke, and thus God had been watching her, helping her to survive. At the sound of her name, Adebanke came over and watched the fire with us.

Suddenly, I heard a whimpering noise. Adebanke's ears perked up and she growled slightly. I looked around me, nervous. Hazkia looked too, but not with the nervousness that I was experiencing. "Hyenas" he told me. I looked out into the savannah, and finally caught a glimpse through the fence of a single hyena.

Finally, I decide it is time for bed. I curl up near the fire and sleep beneath the stars. What will tomorrow bring, I wonder?

 Thanks for the encouragement!

I wake up the next morning, and the entire village is empty, save for Adebanke, who, seeing me awake, leaves to use the bathroom.

I stretch, and take a look at the encampment in the full Savannah sun. There are few buildings, which surprises me until I remember that this is not a year-round establishment.

I notice a couple of tall poles with something at the top of them. Through the glare of the sun, I notice that they contain meat, and realize that they are a means of keeping the animals out of the food the hunters bring back.

Whew! That sun is HOT! I look over the fencing and notice a small river running nearby. It looks perfect for swimming! I jump into the cool, reflective water and look at a nearby Umbrella Acacia Tree.

To my right I hear a strange noise, and turning, I find that I am no longer alone.

Lucky for me, its just a small herd of zebras. They make their distinctive noise as they frolic in the water not 10 feet away from me; they must not realize I'm even there!

Even though I thought I was sitting still, somehow I must have spooked them, as suddenly they begin to run away.

A rustle in the bushes tells me that I wasn't the one who scared them; What is with animals sneaking up on me? I sit still, waiting, hoping its nothing. Then...I see her. In the grass, a lioness sneaks through the growth...

I almost miss the swift action of her jumping from the bushes! It seems my trip to Africa will be a short one...

She takes off after one of the zebras instead. Seems like it is my lucky day. Perhaps not so lucky for the zebra though. I watch the hunt, mesmorized by the beauty and cruelty of nature all in the same instant. It seems the zebra has taken his last swim...

The lioness gives up the chase, and slinks off into the African Savannah. I watch the zebra pound his hooves into the ground, running now not for his life, but to rejoin his herd.

I slink out of the water, weary that the lioness is still around. I make it to the village again, where Adebanke greets me as if I've been gone for ages. I find some berries left in bowl and eat from it, and think about what I want to do next.

Ask and you shall receive :) Thanks for all the great comments!

Before I can do much thinking, Adebanke sits up and listens.
Although I'm starting to think that I will be eaten out here sooner or later due to my inability to see animals before they see me, I'm also excited over the prospect of seeing yet another of Africa's beautiful creatures.

Behind me has gathered four African Wild Dogs, who pant and yip at Adebanke.

She walks over to the fence where the Dogs sit patiently. To my amazement, she begins to growl at them, her ears thrown back and teeth bared as if this is the last warning before she jumps the fence and rips into them.

Luckily for the Dogs (and for me; I can't stand the site of blood!) Adebanke backs down. She walks away, her emotions unclear to me as she goes and sits in one of the huts.

The Dogs stay for a while, playing amongst each other and napping on and off, until dusk begins to settle in.

Admitting to themselves that the little female wasn't going to come out and play, they finally run off. I stir up the coals in the fire, creating again the friendly flame by whom I slept so cozily next to the night before. As I drifted off into sleep (who knew I could be so tired!) I heard the voices of what I guessed to be the hunters in the distance, surely on their way back to the encampment.

Title: Mika's Trip to Africa
Post by: mikaboshi on June 27, 2006, 10:18:10 PM
Really, its a mixture of me having a rough outline in my mind of what I want to have happen, and then seeing how it actually plays out. For instance, for this scene/episode/whatever, I wanted a pack of AWD outside, and to have Adebanke react to them. I did NOT know HOW she would react; whether she would long to play with them, or be upset by them being outside. She decided that part of the story for me. It's all kinda improvisation. I think its much more a fluid story this way, letting the story half unfold by itself, rather than having a strict script that I want to have happen. Plus, its more fun, because even I don't know exactly how it will happen!

there is no 'meat pole' in the game, it is just a grass/hay pole. She only says it's meat to enhance the story:original:

awesome story so far mikaboshi!!!

Before I know it, its morning. The sun paints the canvas that is the sky with a palette full of warm pinks, yellows, and oranges.

I stretch and yawn, and because it is slightly chilly. I place a few more logs on the fire. I look around the enclosure, and notice that Adebanke is not here with me. I do not give this much thought, as I know that she indeed has the freedom to do whatever she wishes.

I go down to the river and splash my head with some water from it, waking myself with the brief cold that ensues. I head back to the camp and change into a clean set of clothing. As I pull the shirt over my head, I hear a loud bellow emit across the savannah. Knowing the sound to be a rhinocerous, I peer over the short fence to see if I can view the creature.

There the male stands with a female. They both look extremely agitated, but I cannot see the source for this aggression.

The large male utters another, low but loud sound before he begins running around.

Then, it appears behind him, a jeep. Knowing that regular safari tours do not occur in this area, I knew it could only be one other thing: poachers.

I crouch down behind one of the huts, afraid that they would not be the most friendly sort of people to be noticed by. Here, I am powerless to do something, I know, but I can hardly be any help if I am caught. Or at least that's how I reasoned out my cowardice to myself.

I watch painfully as the poachers circle the rhino male, laughing at how afraid he is. I hope that maybe they are just playing with him, that perhaps they will just drive away when they get bored, but instead of this happening, my worst fear is realized. One of the poachers brings out his heavy rifle, and shoots at the large male. He falls to the ground as what I suspect is his mate trots off, screaming.

They harvest the large horns that adorned the majestic beast's face, and one young poacher also takes a tooth from the rhino's mouth. He takes a moment to add it to a necklace that he wears around his neck, another small token trophy to accompany several already hanging there. The rest of the rhino is left behind in the dust of the jeep as it roars across the savannah.

I lean back against the hut, crying and hanging my head. I cry not only for the rhino, the cruelty that exists in this world, but also at how powerless I felt to do anything. I cried until sunset, when Adebanke finally came back. She whimpered at me and rested her paw on my knee and licked my face once with her long tongue. I hugged her, and she let me.

The hunter's finally returned, but with no meat. They had gotten some figs from a forest not far away, but the hunt had been largely unsuccessful. I told them of the poachers and admitted that I had done nothing to stop it. They had a hurt look in thier eyes, but I knew it was not because of me. A few of the hunters went out and retrieved some of the meat from the dead rhino, and after saying a few prayers, they solemly went to work at cooking it. I knew it was going to go largely to waste if they did not eat of the fallen beast's meat, but I could not bring myself to eat any of it. I stared blankely at the warm fire until my eyes closed and I fell once again the sleep.

My mind was full of nightmares.

Thanks for all of the compliments! Sorry about the non-updating-ness. I have been working a lot of hours lately, and also (if you hadn't noticed) have been doing some coding.

And that's a very good question, Dandelion Mane...

I woke up, only half refreshed due to my restlessness night. I wipe the dirt from my clothes, standing to meet the savannah sun's warm rays on my face. I look at my reflection in a bucket of water; where my tears had ran, dirt was now caked. I went down to the river to wash, hoping not to just rid myself of the dirt, but also of the horror of yesterday. I walked down to the bank, and the river was full of Lesser Flamingos! At seeing me, they emitted their distinct noise, but were generally unimpressed with my presence.

I return back to camp, feeling refreshed and much better overall. Looking around, I notice once again that Adebanke is not here this morning. Writing it off as a morning ritual for her, I head out with my camera to see what Africa wishes to show me on this great day.

I locate what seems to be a well worn path not far from the camp. I decide to follow it, as it seems that many hooves have followed this, though how long ago I couldn't tell. I am reassured that it has indeed been followed by some ungulate recently when I find a reasonably sized pile of excrement not far from the path.

As I followed the path, I could hear in the distance some grunting. Of course, curiosity got the better of me and I went to check it out. I am so glad that I did!

As far as I could see, Wildebeest were covering the savannah. I saw a few jumping and frolicing in the elephant grass, while some were a little more reserved and were simply grazing upon it. I witnessed a few males getting ready to fight with each other, and I remembered that it was probably mating season for quite a few of the African animals.

Some, I noticed, were very dirty.

I saw at the horizon some tall, moving figures behind the wildebeest, and new them to be the world's tallest animal: the giraffe!

I went in closer, and saw that they were all headed in the same direction: a watering hole that rains before I had arrived had created. One giraffe bowed down to take a sip, and I couldn't help but snap a shot.

To be continued...

Title: Mika's Trip to Africa
Post by: mikaboshi on July 09, 2006, 10:36:49 PM
Yes, I apologize for the lack of updates...I have been working 9 hour shifts daily at work (I'm used to working a 5 days a week, from between 4 and 7 hours each) so I've been just exhausted.

Continuing from the last post...

I continued to peruse my surroundings, watching the mating games of the animals around me. I managed to see a display from the male giraffes, who were fighting over a female near the water hole.

The victor promptly went over and...introduced himself, shall we say.

The wildebeest kept my attention, as no matter where I looked I was entertained by them. Lost in watching them rough house, I scarcely heard the rustling in the brush behind me. I turned around, just in time to glimpse something moving in the grass.

Then, my eyes detected movement, and I look up in time to see a tail disappear behind a rock...

I stood still, trying to hear beyond the noises of the gnu, whose sound now seemed overbearingly loud. I wanted to just shout "SHHHH!" but knew the only thing I would accomplish would be scaring them off.

A female cheetah crept up to the water hole, thirst apparently more of a pressing need than hunger, as she did not even give the wildebeest a second glance. Moreover, she did not try to conceal her presence, and instead just sauntered right up.

After she had lapped the water up, she gave a big yawn. Suddenly, her hair on her neck stood on end, and she couched low to the ground, her small ears pressed tightly to her head. Her pupils dilated to an enormous size, and I couldn't help but think of my cat, sitting at home on the back of the sofa, startled by my coming in late at night. Something had obviously spooked this wild beast.

Afraid of a lion or hyenas, two real threats to the cheetah and its existance on this planet, I looked where her eyes remained facing. A male from the wildebeest heard was apparently finding the cheetah's presence a threat, and was intent on chasing her away.

Again from last post...

Taking the hint, I barely had time to look back at the cheetah before she darted away.

Knowing better than to be out on the savannah long after dusk, I began my short trek back to the camp. As I rounded from the back, I saw a gaping hole in the fencing that was there to protect the villagers from carnivores. In its present state, it couldn't keep out anything.

Weary of the intruder that could be lurking inside, I started yelling loudly, making growling noises and just plain noises, trying to not startle whoever was there. I heard Adebanke barking hysterically. I hoped she was barking at my odd noises rather than at something that lay within...

I stepped over the part of the fence that had been turned into mere bramble, and looked across the camp. Apparently some of the gnu had beat me to home!

I gave a laugh. I knew that the beasts were dangerous, but I just wasn't expecting a bunch of antelope to be inside. They were licking up some of the salt that I had brought from home, in case of the lack of seasoning. Adebanke was trying to be a herding dog, as she barked at the animals, trying to get them out of her home. I tried to help her as best as I could, but she seemed much more adept at it than I.

Finally, all of the animals were gone. I stoked the fire, glad that the wildebeest had not trampled it and put it out. I cleaned up around the camp as best as I could, piling some of the logs and sticks in front of the broken part of the fence. I covered myself with blanket I had found in one of the huts, as tonight was a tad more chilly than the previous nights had been. Adebanke lay down with me, and I placed my arm around her neck. We fell asleep like that, like old friends.

Poor Mr. Fence. However, predators may intrude through the gap in the fence.

Wow! Thanks everyone!

Some good and bad news. The good news is that I am a beta tester for MM2 (wahoo!).

The bad news is that new posts may come later than usual (if you didn't think that could happen). I hope to post once a week at least, but if I can't, well, then I can't. But I will not abandon the storyline, no matter what. I have so many things running through my head!
Title: Mika's Trip to Africa

Long entry. Woo. Hard to do when game kept crashing because MM2 Beta is installed...(sorry, nothing MM2 is in this, don't even ASK, lol)

I woke up with the warmth of the sun on my face, but I don’t think that that was what woke me up. Everyone was in the camp, unusual for me because I was so used to them being gone before I awoke. I saw Hazkia standing next to one of the larger buildings, and he rose his hand to greet me. I waved back at him. I stood up, brushing off the debris that collected on my clothes as I rolled on the ground during the night. I walked over to the camp’s leader, almost colliding with a boy who was quickly carrying a basket of almost brown bananas through my path. When I reached Hazkia, he firmly placed his hand on my shoulder and smiled at me.

“Mika, how are you today? You sleep long time, no?”

I laughed. In his broken English, I could still here my mother scolding me for spending half my summer days sleeping. “I am good, Hazkia. Why is everyone so busy? What is going on?” I looked around the camp, watching people moving back and forth with baskets of food and saw the carcass of what appeared to be a gnu.

“Ahh, Mika, we go home, to the forest. We hunted long time, but the food is scarce. We lucky to get her,” as he pointed to the animal lying in the camp. “But we return here when the rains come. The rains bring plants and water for the animals, and they give birth. When the animals not hungry, we not hungry. You go with us? See home?”

I started to almost panic at the thought of leaving the savannah. I just got here though! I was thinking. I mean, I had only seen flamingoes, zebras, giraffes, wildebeest, African Wild Dogs, a lioness and a cheetah! Thinking back through my list, I realized that seeing those animals in such a short amount of time was quite the feat. I placed my hand on Hazkia’s shoulder, mimicking his stance. “Hazkia, let’s go to your home. This sun is hot!

I began to pack up the few belongings I had. I sat in the hut a while, deleting some extremely bad pictures off of my digital camera’s card to free up some room in case we saw something on the way. I cam across one of the giraffes I had photographed a few days before, and though it was kind of a bad shot, decided to keep it because it just looked so pretty.

As I had woken up much later then everyone else had, and everyone had basically muled themselves with everything we could carry, it was time to say goodbye to the encampment for now. Adebanke showed up just as we were leaving, an almost sad look in her eyes. She barked at us a few times, running into the camp and then back to us, back and forth a few times before finally settling next to the burnt out camp fire.

Hazkia and I could not figure out why the dog was acting as such. We tried to coax Adebanke out of the camp, but with no success. We even tried to offer her a piece of the meat the men had worked so hard to get, but she sniffed it and promptly refused. She chittered at us, begging us to stay with her there. Hazkia scolded her “Adebanke! We leave every year, and you come with us every year. Why you hesitate?”

Instead of an answer from Adebanke, we heard the hooting of a Wild Dog off to the distance. Adebanke sat up, listened, and hooted back.

Hazkia laughed. “Is there someone we need to meet before we leave, Ade’?” She barked a few times at us, seemingly to say yes.

From out of nowhere, a male Cape Dog came near to the camp. Instead of growling at this dog like she had before, she greeted him warmly.

Then she got a serious look on her face. She chittered, then hooted, then barked, almost panicing. From where the male had come, so did two little Wild Dog Pups!

“Well, it seems that we have a few more coming home, this time,” Hazkia stated. “Good, but we not travel with those who are nameless. This boy here, we will call him ‘Yahya’ – God’s Gift. He is God’s gift to our little Adebanke. It strange that a male would mate with one without a pack.

“Now for these youngsters…”

Watching, one pup was obviously attached to the newly dubbed Yahya. Seeing this, Hazkia promptly found a name for her. “You are ‘Adanna’ – father’s loving daughter.” Noticing that Adanna was smaller than the other pup, also a female, Hazkia chuckled. “Your name is ‘Kissa’ - First daughter born to the family, in hopes that Adebanke and Yahya will stay together long time, and make much larger family.”

As the sun began to disappear behind the hills of the savannah, everyone realized that while they were very eager to return to the shady home in the woods, it was too late to head out now. Besides, there were new puppies to play with!

Two giraffes image ?

 Huh? I don't understand your question, I'm sorry!
If you are referring to the fact that I had a picture of two giraffes in my last entry, and then another picture of a giraffe in this entry, then the only thing I can say is that I thought it was a pretty picture, and wanted to share it, and that was the way I worked it into the story.

If that's not what you are inquiring about, then I'm afraid you will have to explain further what you do mean.

Thanks for the nice comments everyone! :blushing:

We woke up to one of the happiest sounds you could perhaps ever wake up to: playing pups. Kissa and Adanna were chasing each other around the camp, yipping and yapping as they did so. Everyone laughed at their antics as we ate some edible plants as a breakfast. The starch and fiber would keep us fuller longer and we didn’t want to eat the gnu meat, as it was going back to feed those who were to meet at the Jungle Village.

Adanna stopped playing around and barked a few times. Curious as to what had attracted her attention, I looked over my shoulder at her. She place her little rump on the ground and held up a paw as her father Yahya came over to see her. Yahya soon made a retching sound and emitted a small amount of partially digested meat onto the ground in front of his daughter.

While Adanna was very satisfied with her accomplishment and proceeded to lick rapidly at the pile, I suddenly had no more appetite, and placed the greens that I had planned on eating back into the basket from which I had acquired them. Hazkia saw my pale face and laughed at me. “No stomach for nature, eh?” The rest of the group laughed with him.

As the others finished eating, I watched the new members to our group interact with each other. Adanna, while the smaller of the two pups, had becoming the dominant one, thus explaining her attachment to Yahya, who was to her the alpha male. Kissa tended to stick with her mother, often nursing while Adanna kept begging for meaty chunks.
Title: Mika's Trip to Africa
Post by: mikaboshi on September 13, 2006, 12:55:52 PM
I had been staring off at the horizon, watching some unknown birds fly there, when my eyes diverted back down to the African Wild Dog pups. Adanna was crouched down near the ground, veritably crawling across the ground on her stomach.

I tried to determine where she was heading off to, but saw nothing. Then, from behind a log, I saw the reason.

Kissa’s little tail wagged despite herself, waiting for Adanna to find her, or better yet, for her sister to creep by and allow Kissa to jump on her unexpectedly. I couldn’t help but laugh when the latter happened. Adanna jumped like a started cat, and began to chase Kissa around the camp. Finally, she told her sister who was boss by throwing her to the ground. Kissa got the message and went back to snuggle with her mother.

(Sorry it's not the jungle yet...but I decided to not just be airlifted to the jungle, lol. We have to travel )

ok, but is the log specifically from an expansion?

And where did you get the branches that go in the fire, or is that just a clever put-an-object-behind-the-fire trick? Thanks.

The logs come with ES.

The branches are an enrichment for the beaver...I don't recall if that was an ES thing or not.

Title: Mika's Trip to Africa
Post by: mikaboshi on October 31, 2006, 09:41:14 AM
We finally headed out under the rise of the sun, the heat already starting to make the sweat drip from my forehead. I was informed that we would be walking along the river for the first leg of the journey; not only would it help us stay hydrated and cool, but it was one the best means of navigation back to the jungle homestead. Knowing that the heat would drive most of the animals away into the shade, I figured that we wouldn't be seeing many creatures till dusk.

We truged on for a few hours before Hazkia said we could take a break. As soon as I had set down the parcels I had been given to carry, and thrown off my clothes, I was in the water. Although the savannah sun had by now warmed up the water considerably, it was still much cooler than the stagnant air. I just laid
down in the water for a while, my head resting on the bank. I closed my eyes against the sun while the villagers drank and ate quietly amongst themselves. With the sun on my face and the cool water around me, it wasn't long before I felt myself drifting into a state of pure relaxation....

I don't know whether it was the movement of the ground or the yelling of the group that woke me first; both somehow seemed to be disconnected from each other yet happening at the same time - my mind was jerked back to reality.

A male elephant in must had decided that we were too close to his river. He was charging at us in a fit of rage, trunk up, ears flapping, and a loud distinct trumpeting emitting loudly from his throat. Behind him stood the bachelor herd he was part of, but they did not seem as upset by our prescence as he did. The ground shook.

Everyone rushed out of the way of the raging bull...all except Kissa. Kissa was in her own world, chasing her tail, oblivious somehow to the one ton animal rampaging directly towards her.

Adebanke, noticing her daughter in danger, went to go get her, but before she could, Yahya stepped up and growled ferociously at the beast.

Will Kissa be okay? Find out next time on Mika's Trip to Africa!

Post by: mikaboshi on December 20, 2006, 01:12:19 AM
Haha I know, I'm such a slacker. I had to sleep though, since I had done practically none of that since the beginning of December, so I've literally been sleeping about 10-12 hours at a time with naps in between. Other than that, I had to beat Okami for the PS2 (AWESOME game for anyone who wants to try it) to make room for any games I get for Christmas *crosses fingers for Spyro* Additionally, I haven't really seen my family a whole lot and so I have been spending time with them. And then, after all of that, I've been working on some ZT2 stuff, so it's just been hard for me to pull myself away from everything, get into the game, and take pictures. And Penguinman just got me addicted to a PC game called Zeus so that has been an increasingly fun part of life too. See, I say I'm a slacker but I've got so much going on! LOL.

Drum roll please! The update is HERE! Apologies for the delay!

Yahya stood his ground as the elephant charged towards him. Whether it was the vibrations of the stampeding elephant or his fear, he was obviously shaking. Over the trumpet of the enraged pachyderm, I could hear him growling.

As Yahya had run out in the way, Adebanke had taken the chance to run out and get the now fearful Kissa who was crouching in the elephant grass. Even with all of the excitement, I took a second to wonder where Adanna was.

Glancing around, I could not see the little Wild Dog pup, and grew even more fearful than I was previously. Who knew one bull could cause such a panic!

Suddenly, my question as to where the older sister had gone was answered. A herd of Giant Sable Antelopes suddlenly came through the ever shortening space between the elephant and Yahya, obviously spooked.

Close on the heels of a an aging member of the group of females was Adanna, obviously enjoying the chase.

The elephant, surprised by this new development, turned suddenly to the bachelor group and left. The Sable Antelopes, now almost out of view, were too fast for the little pup, and she came trotting tiredly back to her mother who greeted her with kisses.

Yahya layed down where he had previously been standing, exhausted by the preceding events. I walked over to him, and placed my hand on his silky fur. His body was still shaking considerably; his heart was racing, and his breathing was so quick I wondered that he was getting any oxygen at all.

Kissa left her mother's side and approached her father, whom she plopped down next to. I could see in his eyes the love he had for this daughter, and I could almost feel within him the relief he was experiencing that she was unharmed.

We waited for the adrenaline to subside a little in all of us before we moved along. Looking over my shoulder, I saw the African Wild Dog family closely strung together, and breathed a sigh of relief that everything had gone alright so far
