Title: Shen's Little Zoo
Post by: ShenTirag on October 16, 2006, 09:13:49 AM
This small family owned zoo contains a variety of peaceful, friendly and mostly small animals, many of which can reside happily side by side.  Currently the zoo is not open to the public, but the hope is that once many of the new animals are happily settled into their homes that the Little Zoo can provide a pleasant, interactive and educational visit for all.

Currently the Little Zoo has only three species: four Pygmy Goats, four Miniature Ponies and four Zebroids.  Whilst none of these animals are particularly exotic, the domestic nature of these species means that they should all reside peacefully together and their playful antics should amuse the guests.

The habitats are designed to be as realistic as possible, and one of the pygmy goats, Sugar (http://dasjoe.de/~becky/snt/snt1.jpg), really enjoys wading through the small natural pool.  There is plenty of lush grass for the animals to roam around, and Wheatabix (http://dasjoe.de/~becky/snt/snt2.jpg) loves to race about the enclosure.

Sometimes there is a little bit too much playfulness in the exhibit, and Fudge and Coffee (http://dasjoe.de/~becky/snt/snt3.jpg), the two male goats, have been caught head-butting each other.  Myriad (http://dasjoe.de/~becky/snt/snt4.jpg), one of the female Zebroids, grinds to a halt quickly before galloping headfirst into the pool!

However many of the interactions between the animals have been positive, with the two ponies Wheatabix and Porridge (http://dasjoe.de/~becky/snt/snt5.jpg) following each other round constantly - who knows, soon little hoofsteps may be heard! :)

Hi Shen. Well what a lovely little zoo you have! This is a really nice change to most zoos (no offence, to anyone!) that have the usual well known animals. I can just imagine people really enjoying this place, especially younger children.

And the Sugar pic is really......sweet! Sorry :blushing:

Hope you'll be showing more soon.: :) :

Thanks very much guys! :)

Some recent news from the grassland paddock - Myriad (http://dasjoe.de/~becky/snt/snt6.jpg), one of the zebroids, is pregnant!  The happy couple seem to be glowing with happiness!

As you didn't see before, just above/behind the little pond is a small rising cliff, perfect for the goats such as Sugar (http://dasjoe.de/~becky/snt/snt7.jpg) to climb upon!

To further expand the Little Zoo, application has been made for a small scrubland exhibit, and a donation of 6 playful meerkats (http://dasjoe.de/~becky/snt/snt11.jpg) has made the staff even more excited about opening day!  These crazy critters (http://dasjoe.de/~becky/snt/snt15.jpg) live in a large, hilly exhibit with a group of four elderly aardvarks, transferred from another small family owned zoo who no longer had the space or time to care for them.  Unfortunately, Angus (http://dasjoe.de/~becky/snt/snt13.jpg), the oldest male, has difficulty with the slopes, so a donation drive is already started up to raise money to re-landscape the enclosure.

The owners hope that children and adults alike will enjoy the somewhat missmatch of the relaxed aardvarks (http://dasjoe.de/~becky/snt/snt17.jpg) and the frisky meerkats (http://dasjoe.de/~becky/snt/snt14.jpg), and also enjoy learning watching both animals deal with their favourite snacks - ants! (http://dasjoe.de/~becky/snt/snt18.jpg)

Edit: Urk, my save file corrupted, guess the Little Zoo will have to start over! (Luckily I remembered what varients each animal was :P)

(Sorry for the delay, university work took precedence over zoo-rebuilding :P)

At the Little Zoo, some major landscaping work has gone on in the aardvark and meerkat exhibit, and we here at the Zoo really think the results speak for themselves! (http://dasjoe.de/~becky/snt/snt22.jpg)  The low stone walls were designed so even the smallest guests could feel close to these scrubland animals, and the tiny meerkats can be seen nice and clearly (http://dasjoe.de/~becky/snt/snt21.jpg).  Elsewhere in the zoo, the new pony ride (http://dasjoe.de/~becky/snt/snt20.jpg) is open, and children are welcome to ride both the Shetland and Miniature ponies which live in the Little Zoo.

Recent new additions to the zoo include a group of free roaming peafowl (http://dasjoe.de/~becky/snt/snt19.jpg), who happily perch in the branches of the protected oak trees at the zoo (hence why many of our oak trees have fences around them) and amuse our guests (http://dasjoe.de/~becky/snt/snt23.jpg).  We've also recently opened a small temperate enclosure, containing the adorable  blue-tongued skinks (http://dasjoe.de/~becky/snt/snt25.jpg), who are so tiny we can't get close enough (http://dasjoe.de/~becky/snt/snt24.jpg) pictures to show you!  These little lizards live with a trio of koalas (http://dasjoe.de/~becky/snt/snt26.jpg), all of which spend a great deal of time hiding in the specially bought eucalyptus trees.  Hopefully these cuddly looking creatures will settle in more in time and we shall be able to update you on their progress!

Lots has been happening at the Little Zoo - it's Baby Time!

We knew something was up when the male miniature ponies started getting territorial again (http://dasjoe.de/~becky/snt/snt27.jpg).  Soon we discovered that both Cheerio and Museli (the two females) are both pregnant, and soon more little ponies will fill our paddock!

We thought Myriad was acting strangely (http://dasjoe.de/~becky/snt/snt28.jpg), and true enough, she gave birth to a beautiful baby girl! (http://dasjoe.de/~becky/snt/snt35.jpg)  She was quickly joined by another foal, as Opal gave birth to a bouncy baby boy! (http://dasjoe.de/~becky/snt/snt34.jpg)  Suggestions for names of these two foals will be gladly received!

Over in the scrubland exhibit, more good news is found - two sets of meerkat twins were born overnight!  Aren't they just adorable? (http://dasjoe.de/~becky/snt/snt31.jpg)  Proud parents keep a watchful eye (http://dasjoe.de/~becky/snt/snt32.jpg) over their tentative explorations.

And that's not the last of our baby-boom!  The koala Keira is now the proud mum of Muffin (http://dasjoe.de/~becky/snt/snt29.jpg), one of the smallest additions to the zoo.  Guests have been delighted watching little Muffin ride around on her mum's back (http://dasjoe.de/~becky/snt/snt30.jpg).

So with all these wonderful new stars in the Little Zoo, we have received an astonishing (for us, anyway ;) ) $5,000 dollars in donations, meaning we have started work on a new mystery sandpit exhibit (http://dasjoe.de/~becky/snt/snt33.jpg).  Can you tell what it is yet? :)

You got it right - the sandpit is for FOXES! (http://dasjoe.de/~becky/snt/snt37.jpg) : :) :

Here at the Little Zoo we are proud to show off not just the diminutive fennec, but also the kit fox, a native to North America.  We started with a pair of each, but that quickly increased! (http://dasjoe.de/~becky/snt/snt41.jpg)  The playful, hyperactive nature (http://dasjoe.de/~becky/snt/snt42.jpg) of these little canids makes them great attractions. The parent-young interactions (http://dasjoe.de/~becky/snt/snt43.jpg) are both engaging and educational for our youngest visitors.

Continuing the baby-boom here at the Little Zoo, Cheerio gave birth (http://dasjoe.de/~becky/snt/snt40.jpg), and we have a gorgeous even-smaller-than-usual miniature pony in the paddock!  The aardvarks have also suprised us, with Annie and young (http://dasjoe.de/~becky/snt/snt36.jpg) providing us with even more cause for celebration!  The baby zebroids are doing well, and integrating well into the herd. (http://dasjoe.de/~becky/snt/snt39.jpg)

Though the pace of life here at the Little Zoo has seemed a little hectic of late, there is always time for a laid-back pony ride (http://dasjoe.de/~becky/snt/snt38.jpg) as the sun draws in early as winter creeps ever nearer.

(I shall be busy over the weekend, so no updates till next Monday/Tuesday, sorry :P)

Post by: ShenTirag on January 14, 2007, 05:44:06 PM
Hah!  I am back and building again! :)  I got bored with the Little Zoo, and since I have MM2 and a whole bunch of essays to write spare time I've been playing around for the last couple of days - heavily inspired by the two wonderful zoo builders Sheltiefan and Zoohio!

So we start off at the zoo entrance (http://dasjoe.de/~becky/showandtell/cz1entrance.jpg), and you can hear the sound of sloshing waves and rushing water.  Looking to your right, (http://dasjoe.de/~becky/showandtell/cz2rightofentrance.jpg) you can see a waterfall pouring into a large pool, and the splash of an animal diving into the water from the central island.

You proceed towards the elevated path that leads towards an arial view of this exhibit, and from this vantage point you can see turtles resting on the island (http://dasjoe.de/~becky/showandtell/cz3turtleview.jpg), and also the head of a barking sealion.  The two species seem to happily co-exist together (http://dasjoe.de/~becky/showandtell/cz4sealionturt.jpg), using both the central island and a false floating island to rest on.  The sealions are loud and playful (http://dasjoe.de/~becky/showandtell/cz5sealion.jpg), a stark contrast to the somewhat slow moving and silent turtles.

Turning around, you look back the way you came from (http://dasjoe.de/~becky/showandtell/cz6middle.jpg), down the raised path to the fountain marking the central hub of this area of the zoo.  Down on ground level next to the lake enclosure are the Mongolian Wild Asses (http://dasjoe.de/~becky/showandtell/cz7wildass.jpg), who seem happy and content in their lush exhibit.  They spend a lot of time foraging amongst the foliage (http://dasjoe.de/~becky/showandtell/cz8asssnug.jpg).  Looking at the path you walked down, (http://dasjoe.de/~becky/showandtell/cz9backto.jpg) you see a nice gazebo surrounded by trees to rest in, and decide to pass that and begin your exploration of the left hand side of the zoo.

You come across a fenced in area (http://dasjoe.de/~becky/showandtell/cz10rayhouse.jpg), again surrounded by trees and through the entrance you spy the bright aquamarine of reef water.  Inside the fencing, it seems to contain a medium sized pool (http://dasjoe.de/~becky/showandtell/cz11raypool.jpg) with easy accessability to guests.  After sitting on the benches for a while, you see why the pool is open to viewing. (http://dasjoe.de/~becky/showandtell/cz12rayone.jpg)  The manta rays frequently breach the surface (http://dasjoe.de/~becky/showandtell/cz13raytwo.jpg), and the exhibit is designed so that guests can actually reach in and touch the skins of these magnificent gliders.

I think that's quite enough for now, more later ;)

Post by: ShenTirag on January 15, 2007, 01:21:34 PM
Thanks everyone, and yes I will submit the fence but anything you see of mine that I haven't released should really be discussed in my Current Projects thread, this is about the zoo - not my fences XD

On the opposite side of the path from the manta pool, you see a large open faced glass wall (http://dasjoe.de/~becky/showandtell/cz14mantees.jpg), a little away from the main path.  The glass wall gives you an uninterrupted view of inside the exhibit, which seems to be themed like a lush shallow sea.  Inside, a pair of gentle manatees (http://dasjoe.de/~becky/showandtell/cz15manatees.jpg) swim inside together, moving so gracefully despite their size, and browsing on the seafloor vegetation.

Across from the manatees is a small rainforest exhibit (http://dasjoe.de/~becky/showandtell/cz16fanakola.jpg), containing the small and beautifully patterned fanaloka (http://dasjoe.de/~becky/showandtell/cz17fanaloka.jpg).  These small critters seem quite content in their leafy enclosure, and their camouflage (http://dasjoe.de/~becky/showandtell/cz18fanaloka.jpg) is fantastic to look at.

Along from the fanaloka is a glass window guarded by two rhino topiaries (http://dasjoe.de/~becky/showandtell/cz19scrub.jpg), which you walk past to view what is inside.  A male Indian Elephant wades (http://dasjoe.de/~becky/showandtell/cz20eleph.jpg) through a pool, trumpeting to others further into the enclosure. (http://dasjoe.de/~becky/showandtell/cz21eleph.jpg)  The wading elephant is soon joined by his mate and the two elephants seem to really enjoy the water (http://dasjoe.de/~becky/showandtell/cz24eleph.jpg).  Also in this large mixed exhibit are a pair of white rhinos (http://dasjoe.de/~becky/showandtell/cz23rhino.jpg), and a pair of gharials (http://dasjoe.de/~becky/showandtell/cz25gharial.jpg) whose carnivorous presence does not seem to bother the large herbivores.  Turning around, you head up the elevated path (http://dasjoe.de/~becky/showandtell/cz22path.jpg), and see the overview of the scrubland exhibit.  The elephants raise their trunks and call to you (http://dasjoe.de/~becky/showandtell/cz27over.jpg)!

I'd like to say a huge thank you to all the designers here at ZA who's wonderful downloads I use time and time again! :D

More zoo, more zoo, more zoo for you :)

First of all, you decend back down the path from the scrubland exhibit and turn left, facing down a path towards a spacious food court (http://dasjoe.de/~becky/showandtell/2cz01foodcourt.jpg).    There is plenty of shaded seating around a central fountain, and all the kiosks are tucked away at the back (http://dasjoe.de/~becky/showandtell/2cz02foodcourt.jpg).  Opposite the food court, a large tank (http://dasjoe.de/~becky/showandtell/2cz03foodcourt.jpg) can be seen, and you move closer to see what it contains.

This amazonian tank is home to two species - the tucuxi dolphin and yellow spotted river turtles (http://dasjoe.de/~becky/showandtell/2cz04tucuxi.jpg).  The tucuxi are incredibly friendly, and get up very close and personal indeed! (http://dasjoe.de/~becky/showandtell/2cz05tucuxi.jpg)  You are lucky enough to catch their feeding time, and watch them chase each other around (http://dasjoe.de/~becky/showandtell/2cz06tucuxi.jpg) after scraps of fish.

Returning to the other side of the zoo, you see a large exhibit containing a waterfall (http://dasjoe.de/~becky/showandtell/2cz07leopards.jpg).  A pair of beautifully marked black leopards (http://dasjoe.de/~becky/showandtell/2cz08leopards.jpg) stalk around, drinking from the waterfall churned pool.

If you're interested, here (http://dasjoe.de/~becky/showandtell/mapoverview.jpg) is the current view of the zoo from above, but LARGE IMAGE warning.  As you can see there will be more soon, I'm just a bit busy to be taking photos right now :whistling

Thank you all so very much :)

To the right of the black leopards is an elevated path that takes you across the river (http://dasjoe.de/~becky/showandtell/2cz09path.jpg) to an isolated island.  This part of the zoo has a mountainous feel (http://dasjoe.de/~becky/showandtell/2cz10path.jpg), with sharp grey rock breaking through the sandy grass that prevails throughout much of the zoo.  The left hand exhibit contains a small gelada colony (http://dasjoe.de/~becky/showandtell/2cz11gelada.jpg), which spend their time foraging on the ground and munching on grass.  The larger exhibit to the right contains fjordland ponies (http://dasjoe.de/~becky/showandtell/2cz12pony.jpg), which whinny and call to each other as they trot around the grasses.  They also share their enclosure with another European animal, the ibex (http://dasjoe.de/~becky/showandtell/2cz13ibex.jpg), which headbutt each other playfully.  The hilly nature of the exhibits mean that the animals are constantly popping in and out of view (http://dasjoe.de/~becky/showandtell/2cz14pony.jpg).

Sorry it's a bit of a small update this time, but I'll have more soon, don't worry :)

I promised you another update, and here one is :D

From behind the food court, you can now see an elevated viewing area (http://dasjoe.de/~becky/showandtell/3cz01foodcourt.jpg) from behind the stands.  On closer inspection, you can see animals through the windows (http://dasjoe.de/~becky/showandtell/3cz02foodcourt.jpg).  One of the animals you can see is a Scimitar-Horned Oryx (http://dasjoe.de/~becky/showandtell/3cz03porthole.jpg), and this prompts you to explore behind the food court.

Walking around, you come across the upwards path (http://dasjoe.de/~becky/showandtell/3cz04path.jpg), and ascend.  Looking to your left you can look back across the foodcourt (http://dasjoe.de/~becky/showandtell/3cz05foodcourt.jpg), and ahead you can see the layout of the peaceful raised area (http://dasjoe.de/~becky/showandtell/3cz06path.jpg).

Right from the viewing area you can see down into the main desert area (http://dasjoe.de/~becky/showandtell/3cz07desert.jpg), featuring a mixture of the Scimitar-Horned Oryx you spotted earlier and some Addax.  The desert animals seem quite at home (http://dasjoe.de/~becky/showandtell/3cz08desert.jpg) in the exhibit, climbing over sand dunes and patchy grass.  As night falls, the animals settle down to sleep (http://dasjoe.de/~becky/showandtell/3cz09desert.jpg).  The desert animals are peaceful to watch, though every so often one will decide to gallop around! (http://dasjoe.de/~becky/showandtell/3cz10addax.jpg)

The exhibit to the left features a lush savannah (http://dasjoe.de/~becky/showandtell/3cz11savannah.jpg), containing many African grazers such as Wildebeest, Giant Sable Antelope, East African Oryx, Springbok and Thompson's Gazelles (http://dasjoe.de/~becky/showandtell/3cz12savannah.jpg).  The East African Oryx seem just as lively (http://dasjoe.de/~becky/showandtell/3cz13savannah.jpg) as their desert counterparts, and many of the savannah animals seem to enjoy chasing each other around.  The rather shy male Giant Sable Antelope (http://dasjoe.de/~becky/showandtell/3cz14savannah.jpg) is a wonderful dark colour, and tends to stay peacefully by the poolside rather than race about like the smaller antelope.

Of course people love your zoos - they're among the very best here at za! Any chance you might submit this one for download when its finished? After the fences are available, of course. : :) :

I had considered doing so - but to be honest the sheer amount of user made downloads within this zoo would make it impractical at the moment. Perhaps when the zoo is finished I might make a download-friendly version (replacing downloaded foliage with official foliage, for example).  It is something I will think about anyway :)

Hey guys!  Thanks for all the comments

May be a while till I update again, my game has gone screwy and I've had to take out all my custom downloads and possibly reinstall, might have to fill this thread with a new zoo instead for a while :P

BTW: I doubt the coastal zoo will be up for download...it contains 48 user created downloads so far XD

As much as we hate to hear you're having computer problems - I know, I for one, won't mind a new zoo - any zoo by you is outstanding!
