Blue whale
« on: February 13, 2007, 08:16:34 AM »
hey,

I found on wikipedia something about a blue whale in zoo tycoon 2 :D :D :D. I don't know this is true, but can somebody check it.
They say:

In the shared files there is a .DDS texture picture file of guests viewing a blue whale in a tank.

I have checked and there is a DDS texture showing a guest looking at a blue whale.  It is however an artistic drawing and not an in-game rendering, and appears to be connected to a photobooth-type object (photoboad_mm.dds).  It does not indicate the existance of an in-game blue whale, and we know one does not exist.  I have attatched the file to confirm this.

The blue whale you speak of is the unlockable whale hall that you get after doing some marine challenges, I think. When the downloads are up and running again, we'll have a hack available for you if you don't want to complete the challenge and have it be unlocked for you.

My question is, why would they have a picture of a blue whale if it's not in game?? It doesn't make any sense! And the blue whale hall ofcourse, you can see that all the animals there are there in the game except for the whales!(They should have a blue whale, atleast MM1 had a humpback whale for dl [I think]) So.............?

Maybe BF planned to have a blue whale and it never made the final cut and this .dds is just a left over from their initial plans?

Maybe it's there to educate guests; a zoo's task is to spread the message of conservation. Whales need to be conserved even though it's VERY hard, if not impossible, to have fully grown specimens of most adult whales in captivity.

And, IIRC, we can't mesh in MM, so there won't be any blue whales in a LONG time.

Maybe its possible to do a blue whale and make it look real if we recolor and resize a whale shark or short finned pilot whale.  The models for those 2 animals seem somewhat similar to how a blue whale's shape is.

You can trust most of the articles, but there is a huge amount of vandalism in the ZT2 pages (I bet it's some spoilt brat), so there is a need of lock of those articles, and supervision of them. Some people from here keeps it at bay, but we need support.

Yeah, I hope someone can do that. It would be so cool to have a blue whale in my zoos!

Perhaps it was a Blue Whale in the early game production, but it was left out due to the available space in the game maps, and BF decided that a bigger map wouldn't do for the final game.
So, the Blue Whale was taken down from the game and we got the Shark Whale or something like that.

There's a bit too much speculation over nothing here.  It's one drawn image that I think is part of the blue whale hall skin, and has no relevance on other in-game content.  The realism of actually having a blue whale in game is very low indeed.

There are "whales" of sorts in ZT2.  Whales are classified in the biological order Cestacea, which includes dolphins, whales, and a few other marine mammls. The Orcanus Orca, more commonly known as the Orca or Killer Whale, although it is more closely related to dolphins,  is sometimes considered a whale.

:dolphin- A common Cestacean, the Dottle Nose Dolphin (Tursiops truncatus)
