Post by: Nique on June 08, 2006, 09:00:40 AM
Welcome to the North America Zoological Research & Rehabilitation Association!

NAZRRA’s mission is to guide, encourage and support the zoos, aquariums, and like-minded organizations of the world in animal care and welfare, environmental education and global conservation. Though we do run a fully functional zoo, our main operations are in research and rehabilitation. Other zoos, organizations and concerned citizens are able to contact us when they need help in relocation of animals or rehabilitation of injured or sick animals.

If you have any animal concerns, please write to our staff and a tactical team will be on its way as soon as possible. Also, all of our animals in our care are up for adoption while they are staying with us. If you choose to help care for an animal, you will receive an adoption certificate that you can print.

*Note: additionally, I will be using ‘real news’ items from around the world as inspiration

Good Morning! As the newly appointed liaison for NAZRRA, I thought I might give you a quick rundown of our organization. We began our zoo with $1 million dollars and have been lucky enough to have plenty of money reserved for research and rehabilitation of our animal friends here in the sanctuary. Right now, we have 36 animals with 13 babies on the way.

Our Animal Guests:
4 Bongos
4 African Buffalo
3 Drom. Camels
2 Caribou
3 Addra Gazelles
4 Thomson’s Gazelles
2 Moose
4 Musk Ox
2 Scimitar Horned Oryx
5 Peafowls
3 Zebra

These animals all came to us from Cumberland, Maryland where there was a tragic fire at a privately owned zoo back in March. From an article in the Globe, "You can imagine the chaos," said Deputy Chief State Fire Marshal Allen Gosnell.

The fire's cause still hasn’t been determined.

Zoo owner Robert Candy said 70 to 100 animals died and the fire heavily damaged the building. Another 50 to 60 animals, including lions and tigers, were kept outside and survived. Those that survived were temporarily housed in several different zoos and organizations such as ours. Last month, Candy contacted NAZRRA and stated that those we continued to house, could be released to the wild as soon as we feel they are fit.

As you can see our Bongo family is thriving in our facility! They have kept our staff busy the last two days, having 2 new babies within 12 hours of each other!

Our African Buffalo are also doing great since thier move, and had their own new arrival just yesterday.

Don't forget! Please feel free to contact us here at NAZRRA if you need help or if you would like to name or adopt any of our animals while they are here with us.

Wow, the last couple of days have been busy! We have had several new additions to NAZRRA - lots of baby pictures that we will get uploaded soon. In the meantime, here are a couple of pictures of our adults...

This is Felix, one of our camels that came here after the fire. When we got him, his tail was singed and he was having a bit of difficulty breathing because of the smoke he had inhaled; but our vets have been taking care of him and he is doing great now!

Next up is Jake, a 5 year old male moose. He and his mate, Loralei, both came to us after the fire as well. And as of yesterday are the proud parents of Wade and Billy (so named by the staff here at NAZRRA).

Sadly, we have more news today. Team NAZRRA got a call yesterday about a baby hippo up in Vancouver. From the news article:

June 1, 2006
Vancouver - A commercial zoo was charged on Wednesday with animal cruelty for keeping a baby hippopotamus alone for 19 months in a small, dark shed on a concrete floor.

"Even inmates in prison don't spend their lives alone," said Eileen Drever, the animal protection constable who investigated the zoo.

It is the first time a major Canadian zoo was charged, according to the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, which employs Drever.

Prosecutors laid two counts of causing an animal to be in distress, after the Greater Vancouver Zoo, a private amusement park in this west coast metropolis, failed to comply with Drever's orders to improve the animal's life.

The zoo operators could face a fine of up to $1 800 or six months in prison.

The hippo, named Hazina, was bought as a baby from another Canadian zoo in Granby, Quebec.

"She's a wonderful animal," said Drever, who noted the young hippo has bonded with her zoo keeper and is so friendly she likes to lick visitors.

Hazina is now two years old, weighs about 450kg, and has spent the past 19 months in a pen measuring about five metres by six metres, which includes a small wading pool.

"I was quite shocked to see the conditions she was living in," said Drever, who ordered the zoo in November to allow Hazina access to natural daylight.

The SPCA ordered the zoo to enlarge Hazina's shallow pool so she can relieve her weight in water to avoid stress on her joints, and to cover the concrete floor of her shed with rubber matting.

A zoo official told local reporters the charges are "garbage" and said there have been construction delays in building a new pen for the hippo. However, he also acknowledged that 19 months was too long for Hazina to spend in the small shed.

Four hippopotamuses have already died at the zoo. In the 1980s two broke through thin ice on a pond in winter and drowned. In the past six years, two others died while in their 20s. Hippos typically live to age 40, said Drever.

The zoo recently lost its accreditation with the Canadian Association of Zoos and Aquariums, which monitors standards of animal care. - Sapa-AFP

Well, the up side to Hazina’s tragic story is that she is now on her way to NAZRRA. The zoo officials decided that they would better off finding Hazrina a new home and once they are able to regain their accreditation perhaps seeking a new hippo. As soon as she arrives, we will post some pictures for you to see.

In other news, our Bongo babies are doing beautifully – here is a snapshot of Kipper that we got yesterday. Such a cute face!

Remember Felix? Our camel who came to us with some breathing difficulties? Well, he is doing so much better now and seriously strutting his stuff after the birth of his son, Hamilton, yesterday! Yes, the staff has named him Hamilton - Hammy for short - for obvious reasons!

Here is a picture of our baby Caribou, Morgan, having a mid-morning snack. She nurses constantly, but mom doesn’t seem to mind one bit!

Until next time,
Team NAZRRA

Just finished our renovation of our entrance today and will have a large ribbon-cutting ceremony tomorrow, Monday, June 12, 2006. Whew! Just in time for the summer season! We weren't sure we were going to make it for a while. Not that the old entrance was bad - but we feel this one has more 'pizazz.'

From the front:

From the first deck:
This will be the only deck with public access and will have a small food court and restrooms and such

Wow, sorry it has taken so long to update you on Hazina, but we have all been working around the clock to get everything ready for her. We finally got everything ready and she arrived late yesterday afternoon!

At first she was feeling a little shy around everyone and she spent a while just getting used to her new surroundings.

But soon enough, she was exploring and she got to go for her first 'real' swim! No more small wading ponds for her. You can tell how happy she is by that great smile!

After she had several hours to relax, we introduced her to Harry. That's right, never will she be completely alone again! Everytime I look at this photo I expect to hear the music from the Lady and the Tramp and to see them splitting a plate of pasta.

As far as I am concerned, your whole story of the hippo at GVZ (greater van. zoo) is EDITED FOR LANGUAGE

There are many flaws in your 'story'. First off, the zoo is not in a metropolitan area, it is about an hour outside of Vancouver, in Aldergrove. 'We' had two deaths. One in '84 when one of our hippos managed to fall through the ice one of their ponds (very cold winter, usually little to no ice). The other death occurred in '96 if I recall, when a baby hippo was stillborn (if you include that being the zoo's fault). The mother was healthy... I live in Langley, pretty close to the zoo.

If this is the story that you heard, so be it. I am just clearing this up...

Ps: i think your pics and zoo are awesome, escpecialy the new enterance!!

Hey Brett -

Not trying to upset anyone. Like I said in the beginning of my zoo 'story' - I'm using news articles as my 'inspiration.' Just so you can see the original story, I'm including the link from Zoo Animal News -
http://www.iol.co.za/index.php?set_id=1&click_id=22&art_id=qw1149124865613B253 (http://www.iol.co.za/index.php?set_id=1&click_id=22&art_id=qw1149124865613B253)

And I'm glad you like the pics and the zoo entrance - that was a lot of fun to play with.

mkay....well i dont even know if this is 'the' gv zoo...the article doesn't make sense to me though...
Quote
the Greater Vancouver Zoo, a private amusement park in this west coast metropolis
it's in the middle of nowhere, and its more of a 'wild animal park' not an amusement park.

It is not a 'commercial zoo' as the story claims...

But, this all depends if they are talking about the old zoo. The Vancouver Metropolitan Zoo, they closed down around 10 years ago...

Great news here at NAZRRA this morning!

The question on the lips of zoologists at NAZRRA is will it turn into love, holy matrimony and offspring.

Right now, Snowflake, an 11-month female snow leopard and the latest addition to our animal collection, simply has a crush on Makalu.

And Makalu, the object of her affection and a male deemed a suitable life partner, doesn’t mind being followed around by the snow leopard kitten.

“That’s a start,” according to Marie-Josée Limoges, a veterinarian at the zoo who cares for the pair of snow leopards.

“They're buddies,” she added. “The zoo’s hope is that next year at this time we are raising little snow leopard cubs.”

Call it courtship in captivity, dating zoo-style, the NAZRRA twosome are part of an international program aimed at saving the endangered cat from extinction.

The program run by the American Zoo and Aquarium Association has determined Snowflake and Makalu to be a good genetic match and, now, the rest is up to them, Limoges said.

So please welcome Snowflake and Makalu and keep your fingers crossed that this will be the start to a very long and loving relationship for the two of them.

Here is Snowflake exploring her home while keeping Makalu in sight.

And Makalu checking out the swimming hole - I'm sure looking for something tastey to eat.

Also, just to recap. We still have animals available for adoption, so if you would like to help support and/or name any of our animal friends – please speak up! Or if you have heard any news stories where you like us to step in and investigate or help out, keep us in mind. We would love to hear from you!

4 African Buffalo
4 Drom. Camels (Felix (m), 2 females, and Hammie (son)
3 Caribou (male, female, daughter – Morgan)

2 Moose
4 Musk Ox
2 Scimitar Horned Oryx

DATELINE: June 28, 2006

Good morning! Sorry for the lack of updates lately, but I have been out of town at a Zoo Animal Welfare conference in Washington state for the last few days. We had a great turnout with more than 200 zoo-related personnel and scientists from around the world – all in an effort to preserve, conserve, and educate the world about our animal friends.

The facility where we met was amazing! One of our nation’s best zoos - with an amazing reputation due to how well they care for their animals and the research that is constantly going on there.

The day of our arrival we were treated to a helicopter tour of the facility and it was simply breathtaking! Of course, as time allowed in between all of the conference activities, I walked the zoo as well and it was even better from the ground than flying above it.

I took about 200 photos, but here are just a few…

Here is an overhead shot of the Desert exhibit, taken from the helicopter.

And the entrance from the ground:

In this exhibit, they had camels and wild burros all living very happily together. The camels were originally on loan to the zoo but recently, this became their permanent home.

The Boreal Exhibit was interesting. It had a mix of grizzly and wolverines. Both seemed to really enjoy running around almost teasing each other.

Thank you RND! :original:

Hello all! Sorry about my lack of posting here lately, between vacations and testing MM2, I lost track of how long it had been since I posted.

I decided to create a new zoo using the Safari theme only in a medium scrub map (I love the way the colors play off the foliage – it looks somehow more realistic).

The Entrance into Safari Sights  (http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k158/nique_unique/Safari%20Zoo/Entrance.jpg)leads guests right to the Safari fountain and of course further up you will see a pathway that leads up to the snack area. Feel free to head on up and grab a hot dog or a drink before we continue.

As we head to our right (http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k158/nique_unique/Safari%20Zoo/pathway.jpg), you will see that our first exhibit brings us to a mixed exhibit of Zebra and the Thompson Gazelle (http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k158/nique_unique/Safari%20Zoo/zebra-gazelle-overhead.jpg). They get along so well together.
Zebra : (http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k158/nique_unique/Safari%20Zoo/Zebra.jpg)
Thompson Gazelles: (http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k158/nique_unique/Safari%20Zoo/Thompson-Gazelle-1.jpg)

To your left, we have our Lion exhibit. From overhead:  (http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k158/nique_unique/Safari%20Zoo/lion-overhead.jpg) Here is Dad: Watching me watching you…  (http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k158/nique_unique/Safari%20Zoo/Lion-1.jpg)
and Mom being a great provider (http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k158/nique_unique/Safari%20Zoo/Lion-3.jpg) and protector (http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k158/nique_unique/Safari%20Zoo/Lion-2.jpg).

Look for more coming pictures tomorrow

Those pics are wonderful :woot:. I agree the safari theme and foliage does look great against the scrub.

Thanks Sheltiefan!

The guests love watching our animals through the binoculars (http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k158/nique_unique/Safari%20Zoo/Guest.jpg).

Past another fountain we find the Wildebeests (http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k158/nique_unique/Safari%20Zoo/Wildebeast.jpg). They seem so tame and peaceful just meandering through the foliage.

If you look to your left now, you’ll see our pair of Reticulated Giraffes (http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k158/nique_unique/Safari%20Zoo/Giraffe.jpg). Beautiful creatures but they do have their funny side as well! This one  (http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k158/nique_unique/Safari%20Zoo/Giraffe-Joker.jpg)looks like he just pulled a practical joke on someone!

If we walk back to through the center courtyard and snack mezzanine, we will come to our mixed exhibit of Beira Antelopes and Pronghorn Antelopes. The Beira (http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k158/nique_unique/Safari%20Zoo/Beira-Antelope.jpg) can be a bit silly but the Pronghorn  (http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k158/nique_unique/Safari%20Zoo/Pronghorn.jpg)are very elegant.

To your right we have a rather large heard of Addra Gazelles (http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k158/nique_unique/Safari%20Zoo/addra-gazelle-herd.jpg). A valuable source of food for humans throughout their harsh range, addra have been hunted extensively for their meat. Addra have also been hunted because they are seen as competition with livestock for the limited food and water in their region. Although they are well adapted to harsh environments, addra still heavily depend on tree cover for protection. This is an endangered species that has become very rare and is disappearing fast due to poaching.

EDIT: Do you prefer a link to the pictures like I have done? Or thumbnails?

I started a new zoo today based on the map that I put up for download...Come on in and visit the Waterhaven Zoo

Coming through the Entrance  (http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k158/nique_unique/Safari%20Zoo/Waterhaven/entrance2.jpg)- notice the waterfalls (http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k158/nique_unique/Safari%20Zoo/Waterhaven/entrance.jpg) on either side of the walkway...

Here is an overhead view  (http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k158/nique_unique/Safari%20Zoo/Waterhaven/entrance-overhead.jpg)looking back at the entrance

Walking forward a bit, we have a pathway that takes us to the Alpine entrance  (http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k158/nique_unique/Safari%20Zoo/Waterhaven/Alpine-Entrance.jpg)of the Waterhaven.

An overhead view  (http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k158/nique_unique/Safari%20Zoo/Waterhaven/alpine-overhead.jpg)of the Alpine exhibits before we take a closer look...

Our first exhibit to your left is the Gelada (http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k158/nique_unique/Safari%20Zoo/Waterhaven/Gelada.jpg) exhibit. We have a single male and 4 females  (http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k158/nique_unique/Safari%20Zoo/Waterhaven/Gelada2.jpg)with 2 younguns' at this time...

Next, we have a mixed exhibit with 2 pair of Ibex (http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k158/nique_unique/Safari%20Zoo/Waterhaven/ibex.jpg) and 2 pair of Markor (http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k158/nique_unique/Safari%20Zoo/Waterhaven/Markor.jpg).

To your right we have the Snow Leopard exhibit with a male (http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k158/nique_unique/Safari%20Zoo/Waterhaven/Snow-Leopard2.jpg) and a pregnant female (http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k158/nique_unique/Safari%20Zoo/Waterhaven/Snow-Leopard.jpg).

Coming back out to the main causeway, you'll see to your left a few guest amusements (http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k158/nique_unique/Safari%20Zoo/Waterhaven/Main-Causeway.jpg) and the Lagoon (http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k158/nique_unique/Safari%20Zoo/Waterhaven/Lagoon.jpg) in front of you. Entering our Savannah side of the zoo now...

First up we have our entrance that has the food court  (http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k158/nique_unique/Safari%20Zoo/Savannah-Entrance-Food-Cour.jpg)just to your left. As we walk past the food court we find another bathroom and statue  (http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k158/nique_unique/Safari%20Zoo/Savannah-Entrance.jpg)greeting us.

Looking down the pathway (http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k158/nique_unique/Safari%20Zoo/Savannah-Pathway.jpg), on your right you will find the Giant Sable Antelope (http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k158/nique_unique/Safari%20Zoo/Savannah-Sable-Antelope.jpg). They just such a gorgeous animal.

Walking past the statue (http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k158/nique_unique/Safari%20Zoo/Savannah-Statue.jpg), you will come to the Masai Giraffe (http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k158/nique_unique/Safari%20Zoo/Savannah-Masai-Giraffe.jpg).

On your left, we have a mixed exhibit with the Thompson Gazelle  (http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k158/nique_unique/Safari%20Zoo/Savannah-Thompson-Gazelle.jpg)and the sweet little Dik Dik (http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k158/nique_unique/Safari%20Zoo/Savannah-Dik-Dik.jpg).

And finally, our last Savannah exhibit at the moment... the Serval (http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k158/nique_unique/Safari%20Zoo/Savanah-Serval.jpg). They are so funny and cute to watch!

Personal Note: Sorry it has been so long since I have updated here, I kinda caught a 'bug' - the design bug anyway...lol... I have been busy working on all of my projects and just realized how long it had been since I was here...if you haven't read and are curious, you'll find a link to my project page in my sig down below. Ok, as they say, "On with the show..."

As the sun sets on another busy day, conversation turns to the events of the past two months.

Wiping the sweat from her brow, Nique turns to Rachel saying, "I can't believe how much has gotten done around here in the last 6 weeks! It's amazing the difference!"

Rachel glances around her, shaking her head, "But there is so far to go!" I am so happy that the grant came through, but truly, I didn't know how hard this was going to be."

"Just be glad that it isn't us doing all of the hard work!" Nique says with a chuckle.

Thinking back to what brought her to Waterhaven in the first place, it was a fluke - a stroke of fate. She had been busy working in another zoo (http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k158/nique_unique/Safari%20Zoo/Entrance.jpg); her life devoted to caring for the animals and running a profitable business so that she could reinvest that money into more research. One day she just decided that she needed to take a break, to see something besides the zoo walls and to smell something besides the behind the scenes odors of running a small menagerie. As she wandered the back roads of Maine just following the road - any road - she came to a small private sanctuary set firmly in the middle of a grassland oasis (http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k158/nique_unique/Safari%20Zoo/grassland.jpg). She had to see it. Once inside, she was appalled at the living conditions of the animals (http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k158/nique_unique/Safari%20Zoo/Old-Exhibits.jpg). Not that it was abusive, but they only had the bare minimum to exist  (http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k158/nique_unique/Safari%20Zoo/Jaguar-Old-Exhibit.jpg)on. Too tight enclosures, little or no shade, no toys or other enhancements. It seemed more like a line of prison cells  (http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k158/nique_unique/Safari%20Zoo/Old-Exhibits-Overhead.jpg)than a zoo or sanctuary. There were few animals, nine in all. A poor man's Noah's Ark. A pair of Grizzly Bears, a pair of American Bison, Jaguars, Lions, and a pair of White Rhinos (http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k158/nique_unique/Safari%20Zoo/Old-Exhibits-White-Rhino.jpg). And finally, a single lone male Grey Wolf.

to be continued...

While wandering around, feeling helpless against the animals' plight, Nique happened upon who she took to be a keeper. Turned out it was the owner himself. After talking for a bit he went on to explain how the sanctuary had fallen on hard times. It turned out that he had simply run out of money to care for the animals properly and had slowly been donating them to zoos that would take them in. He was horribly upset, but it couldn't be helped.  His heart had been in the right place, he simply didn't have the financial backing or the expertise to be successful. Jokingly, he offered the whole place, animals and all, to Nique if she would see them through to good homes. She left there pensive but not really thinking there was any chance at all to save that gorgeous place.

Once home, she began writing letters explaining the situation and within a month she was calling the owner with a plan. She had financial backers in place, and a grant in the works.

"Nique, are you listening to me?" Rachel brought her out of her daydream and she again turned her attention to the tasks at hand.
"I was telling you that we just got the new arial photos for the advertising campaign that starts next month. What do you think?"

"Wow! They are gorgeous! That's amazing! These will look great in our flyers. Thanks." Flipping through them, she noticed such a huge change in the place. The new entrance  (http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k158/nique_unique/Safari%20Zoo/Entrance-1.jpg)demanded that you pay attention. Gone was the little gravel pathway that led to line after line of cages. Now there were waterfalls flanking each side of a paved pathway, complete with koi in the ponds. Benches greet each visitor  (http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k158/nique_unique/Safari%20Zoo/New-Entrance.jpg)and invite them to sit and rest and just enjoy the view with the waterfalls behind you. A newly commissioned arch  (http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k158/nique_unique/Safari%20Zoo/New-Exhibit-Entrance.jpg)had just gone up the day before and through the arch was the new path past the restaurant  (http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k158/nique_unique/Safari%20Zoo/Restaurant.jpg)and on to the new exhibits.

...to be continued

"Nique! Nique! Come quick! You have got to see this!" Brenden, our head keeper,  was almost squealing like a little schoolgirl in his excitement. "Kodi and Helena were moved this morning to their new exhibit  (http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k158/nique_unique/Safari%20Zoo/Grizzly-Bear-Overhead.jpg)and they are so happy! You have got to come watch them for a while."

Sure enough, once we got close to the obervation area, all of the staff and some of their kids even, were all gathered round watching the bears  (http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k158/nique_unique/Safari%20Zoo/Grizzly-Bear-Observation.jpg)get used to their new environment. Kodi (such a silly name for a bear - but someone had erroneously called him a Kodiak bear a long time ago and Kodi just stuck) anyway, Kodi what prancing around and standing tall calling out to everyone (http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k158/nique_unique/Safari%20Zoo/Grizzly-Bear-Kodi.jpg)! It was amazing to see him standing so majestically when just the day before he had been moping around his cage. I think one of their favorite parts of their new home is the river that runs through it though. I caught Helena swimming  (http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k158/nique_unique/Safari%20Zoo/Grizzly-Bear-Helena.jpg)back and forth and playing with the fish several times. They both are so much happier already. I can't wait to get everyone else moved!

The next 24 hours saw a lot of changes, One by one we got more animals moved into their new exhibits. The next couple moved into their exhibits were Ozzie (http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k158/nique_unique/Ozzie-Harriet.jpg) and Harriet,  (http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k158/nique_unique/Ozzie-at-Home.jpg)our pair of American Bison. They really seem to be enjoying their new home!  (http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k158/nique_unique/Ozzie-Harriet-Overhead.jpg)

Next to move in was our pair of Jaguars: Ricky and Lucy (http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k158/nique_unique/Lucy-Ricky-New-Home.jpg). I actually got to be there when they were lowering Ricky down  (http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k158/nique_unique/Ricky-Arriving-Home.jpg)into the enclosure and it was an amazing sight to see him slowly emerge from the crate as if he were afraid only to have him look around and start running in joy. He has so much more room now and even a swimming hole  (http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k158/nique_unique/Lucy-Ricky-Swim.jpg)which he and Lucy (http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k158/nique_unique/Lucy-Swim.jpg) both love! The next week saw even more changes as the last three exhibits were made ready. The first to move into their new homes were Leo (http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k158/nique_unique/Safari%20Zoo/Waterhaven/Leo2.jpg) and Leontine (http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k158/nique_unique/Safari%20Zoo/Waterhaven/Leontine1.jpg) - our African Lions. Such grace and power. Before moving them, Leo had tended to pace the fence  (http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k158/nique_unique/Safari%20Zoo/Waterhaven/Leo5.jpg)of his old enclosure. He had even worn a groove next to the fenceline from his back and forth motions. Now both are happy and Leontine (http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k158/nique_unique/Safari%20Zoo/Waterhaven/Leontine3.jpg) loves playing in the waterfall. (http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k158/nique_unique/Safari%20Zoo/Waterhaven/Leontine2.jpg) And Leo loves running around (http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k158/nique_unique/Safari%20Zoo/Waterhaven/Leo1.jpg), playing with the toys and even just sitting back and acting as "King of the Beasts."

Here is an overhead (http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k158/nique_unique/Safari%20Zoo/Waterhaven/LeoLeontineOverhead.jpg) of their new exhibit.

Just west of the Lion exhibit is the new home of Robbie and Rene'  (http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k158/nique_unique/Safari%20Zoo/Waterhaven/Rhino2.jpg)- our pair of White Rhinos - proud parents to be! That's right. As soon as we moved them into their new home, the resident vet did a thorough exam of the two of them and we found out that Rene (http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k158/nique_unique/Safari%20Zoo/Waterhaven/rhino1.jpg)' is expecting her fist offspring. We can't wait to get to meet the new little one, and the new exhibit  (http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k158/nique_unique/Safari%20Zoo/Waterhaven/Rhino3.jpg)will make a wonderful home for them all!

:hearye: This Just In...

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Philadelphia Zoo says it will close its elephant exhibit and transfer the four animals to another facility, Waterhaven, ending nearly a year of uncertainty about the elephants' future.

The zoo's three African elephants - 50-year-old Petal (http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k158/nique_unique/Safari%20Zoo/Waterhaven/AfrEle4.jpg), 24-year-old Kallie (http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k158/nique_unique/Safari%20Zoo/Waterhaven/AfrEle1.jpg), and 23-year-old Bette  (http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k158/nique_unique/Safari%20Zoo/Waterhaven/AfrEle2.jpg)- will be sent to Waterhaven to enjoy a brand new habitat  (http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k158/nique_unique/Safari%20Zoo/Waterhaven/AfrEle3.jpg)designed specifically for them. As well as forty-two-year-old Dulary, the lone Asian elephant.

The zoo dropped plans last year for a 22 million dollar expansion of its elephant exhibit because of rising costs and fundraising difficulties.

---------------

As you can see we have welcomed the first three elephants at Waterhaven and Dulary should be moved to his new home within the week. At this time, he is being held at our medical facility  (http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k158/nique_unique/Safari%20Zoo/Waterhaven/AsianEle1.jpg)and treated for a mild skin infection.

...6 months later...

Well, all of the animals have settled in nicely. Our breeding programs are really taking off and we are lucky enough to have had several visits from our friendly stork. If you ask the American Bisons, they may tell you he is a bit too friendly as they have had 6 children so far!

The big news is the grand opening of the Waterhaven Aquatics Center! :party5:
Would you like to join me for a tour?

Once you come in through the gates at Waterhaven, our Aquatics Center  (http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k158/nique_unique/Safari%20Zoo/Waterhaven/Entrance.jpg)is immediately to your right. I think the engineers did a fabulous job on the design incorporating several marine items  (http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k158/nique_unique/Safari%20Zoo/Waterhaven/21.jpg)into the entrance of the building.

Once you enter, there are five full exhibits. They form a circle around the exhibit in the center - the Bottlenose Dolphins. The first to our left  (http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k158/nique_unique/Safari%20Zoo/Waterhaven/17.jpg)is a mixed exhibit (http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k158/nique_unique/Safari%20Zoo/Waterhaven/20.jpg) of Goblin Sharks and White Sharks.

We have a pair of each, the Goblin sharks: Derek and Natalie  (http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k158/nique_unique/Safari%20Zoo/Waterhaven/15.jpg)and the White sharks: Lionel and Ursula (http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k158/nique_unique/Safari%20Zoo/Waterhaven/16.jpg).

In our second mixed exhibit (http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k158/nique_unique/Safari%20Zoo/Waterhaven/13.jpg), we have 3 species (http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k158/nique_unique/Safari%20Zoo/Waterhaven/14.jpg). We have Steven and Page (http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k158/nique_unique/Safari%20Zoo/Waterhaven/12.jpg), our Leatherback turtles (and their 3 babies - not named yet). Jack and Jill (http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k158/nique_unique/Safari%20Zoo/Waterhaven/10.jpg), our Scalloped Hammerheads, and their twins: Dee and Dum. And Fin and Brook, (http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k158/nique_unique/Safari%20Zoo/Waterhaven/11.jpg) our Blue Marlin pair.

(stay tuned...exhibits 3, 4, and 5 will be posted tomorrow...)

Let's continue our tour shall we? (http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k158/nique_unique/Safari%20Zoo/Waterhaven/3.jpg)

The 3rd exhibit  (http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k158/nique_unique/Safari%20Zoo/Waterhaven/9.jpg)at the Aquatics Center houses our pair of Orcas: Hunter (http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k158/nique_unique/Safari%20Zoo/Waterhaven/8.jpg) and Belle (http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k158/nique_unique/Safari%20Zoo/Waterhaven/7.jpg).

Following along to the next tank (http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k158/nique_unique/Safari%20Zoo/Waterhaven/19.jpg), you'll find a pair of Manta Rays (http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k158/nique_unique/Safari%20Zoo/Waterhaven/5.jpg). Stevie Ray and Corkie  (http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k158/nique_unique/Safari%20Zoo/Waterhaven/6.jpg)- they are such graceful clowns! lol

Our last exhibit at the Center is the Bottlenose Dolphins (http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k158/nique_unique/Safari%20Zoo/Waterhaven/18.jpg). Another pair, named Eric (http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k158/nique_unique/Safari%20Zoo/Waterhaven/1.jpg) and Ariel (http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k158/nique_unique/Safari%20Zoo/Waterhaven/2.jpg).

While the Center will certainly remain our "showcase," we are planning much more relaistic exhibits that will be outdoors. Those habitats are still in the design stage, so if you have any requests or preferences, please speak up!

Thanks everyone! : :) : I'm glad you're enjoying these - I'm having so much fun playing in the water with these gorgeous creatures!

@ Kiwi - no, I'm afraid since I play on my laptop - I don't have a great video card - it's ok - but hubby is the one with the maxed out gaming machine!

Ok, now, to honor a few requests.... since most of them were from the Arctic - I decided to try my hand at a very large Arctic exhibit...

Welcome to the Arctic Adventure!

First up, we have a picture taken from underwater of a beautiful Beluga  (http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k158/nique_unique/Safari%20Zoo/Waterhaven/9-1.jpg)- one of my favorite animals.

A Walrus and a Penguin  (http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k158/nique_unique/Safari%20Zoo/Waterhaven/8-1.jpg)meeting at the Ice Flow - maybe this is their version of the office water cooler?

Again, taken from underwater: an Orca (http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k158/nique_unique/Safari%20Zoo/Waterhaven/7-1.jpg)

Here you'll see a Walrus crossing  (http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k158/nique_unique/Safari%20Zoo/Waterhaven/6-1.jpg)just in front of the ice cave where on of our Polar Bears was just waking after taking a little nap.

The underwater canyon  (http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k158/nique_unique/Safari%20Zoo/Waterhaven/5-1.jpg)looking back towards the animals.

A closeup of the male Norwhal (http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k158/nique_unique/Safari%20Zoo/Waterhaven/4-1.jpg)

Seaside:  (http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k158/nique_unique/Safari%20Zoo/Waterhaven/3-1.jpg)the Polar Bears, walrus, and Penguins decide to enjoy the gorgeous day and spend some time out basking in the sun.

The male Polar Bear  (http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k158/nique_unique/Safari%20Zoo/Waterhaven/2-1.jpg)surveying his kingdom

Again, underwater, a pair of Orca and a lone Beluga
 (http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k158/nique_unique/Safari%20Zoo/Waterhaven/1-1.jpg)resting under the shelter.

Nique I LOVE the way you've sculpted this landscape! Wonderfully done as always! Very impressive - and I think that yes, it must be the office water cooler, or maybe the walrus is just upset that the penguins always hog the ice floe : :P :

Post by: Nique on November 03, 2006, 12:31:10 PM
Ok, I now have pictures from Whale Shark Lake....this 'zoo' was a bit different from others that I've done because instead of the animals being penned in - it's the people who are. Very limited access (though truly I didn't even open this one - just popped in some maintenance people to take care of the filters and such and a couple keepers to help out)

First, an overhead shot (http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k158/nique_unique/Safari%20Zoo/Waterhaven/Whale-Shark-Overview.jpg). This shows a sunken observation area that I built into the side of the lake.

Here's one taken from standing at the observation  (http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k158/nique_unique/Safari%20Zoo/Waterhaven/9-2.jpg)area.

A shot taken while swimming among the Whale Sharks  (http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k158/nique_unique/Safari%20Zoo/Waterhaven/8-2.jpg)(shows the observation area to the right)

A close up of one pair (http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k158/nique_unique/Safari%20Zoo/Waterhaven/7-2.jpg).

Super close up (http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k158/nique_unique/Safari%20Zoo/Waterhaven/4-2.jpg)

About this time, I decided to build a secondary area  (http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k158/nique_unique/Safari%20Zoo/Waterhaven/3-2.jpg)with White Sharks and Gobblin Sharks.

A pair of White Sharks (http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k158/nique_unique/Safari%20Zoo/Waterhaven/1-2.jpg)

Great news! A new baby Whale Shark (http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k158/nique_unique/Safari%20Zoo/Waterhaven/2-Baby-Whale-Shark.jpg)!

Mom (http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k158/nique_unique/Safari%20Zoo/Waterhaven/5-2.jpg) and Baby (http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k158/nique_unique/Safari%20Zoo/Waterhaven/6-2.jpg) swimming together

There has been a lot of talk about how large the Whale Sharks grow, and I decided I'd see how big they get... well, I've only gotten to Jan of year 2 - and at that point there is no noticable difference in size. I have a feeling it will be one of those ...BAM... then it's huge! lol We'll see.... once that happens, I'll post pictures again.

Here is the final shot of the day (http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k158/nique_unique/Safari%20Zoo/Waterhaven/10-1.jpg)... I was trying to get a picture from underneath a White Shark but I missed - but I loved the shot anyway... lol

_____________________________

Following China's lead, the Asa Zoological Park, just outside the outskirts of Hiroshima, has decided to ban virtually all commercial animal shows.

"We should change our thinking from the use of animals for commercial purpose to their real protection," Xiong Chengpei, head of the Shanghai zoo, was quoted as saying by the Oriental Morning Post.

Shall we visit to see the difference it has made in the animals' lives?

You notice the difference in the zoo immediately when you enter. Before, as soon as you walked through the gates, there were rows of ticket booths offering everything from your standard animal trick show to animal rides. Now, you're greeted with local flora  (http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k158/nique_unique/Safari%20Zoo/Japan%20Zoo/entrance.jpg)and just in front of you are the paths leading up to the mezzanine area (http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k158/nique_unique/Safari%20Zoo/Japan%20Zoo/Restaurant-Mezzanine.jpg). There you will find the Oishii restaurant, bathrooms, and of course places to sit and rest  (http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k158/nique_unique/Safari%20Zoo/Japan%20Zoo/Rest-area.jpg)and just enjoy the moment. Another change, though small, is the introduction of the headset kiosks (http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k158/nique_unique/Safari%20Zoo/Japan%20Zoo/Headset-kiosk.jpg). Each headset contains information on the animals, their natural environment, as well as their conservation status.

As we get ready to head back down to the Temperate Trails, if you look over the mezzanine on your right, you can see right in to the Red Panda exhibit (http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k158/nique_unique/Safari%20Zoo/Japan%20Zoo/Red-Panda-overlook.jpg). We'll see more of that later. Come along...

As we walk under the archway (http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k158/nique_unique/Safari%20Zoo/Japan%20Zoo/Temperate-Forest-Gateway.jpg), you can see down the length of the Barbary Ape exhibit on your left. Here we are at the obervation area (http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k158/nique_unique/Safari%20Zoo/Japan%20Zoo/Barb-Ape-Observation-area.jpg), please step on up and have a look! Barbary Apes  (http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k158/nique_unique/Safari%20Zoo/Japan%20Zoo/Barb-Ape-1.jpg)are found in the wild in Morocco and Algeria. They inhabit the plains and mountains and can be found up to altitudes of 200m. In the mountains, they live in forest clearings and sparse undergrowth. A colony of Barbary Apes can also be found on Gibraltar.

Right now, we have 2 males and 2 females, with one pregnant. Females may mate with several males and it is difficult to establish paternity so the reason for this bonding is not known. One theory is that it makes males more popular with the mothers and therefore more likely to be chosen as a future mate, hence ensuring the survival of their line. Look! There is one watching us - watching him (http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k158/nique_unique/Safari%20Zoo/Japan%20Zoo/Barb-Ape-watching.jpg)! I bet he thinks we're crazy! lol

What is unusual among Barbary Apes is that males play an active role in nursing the young and form strong bonds with baby Barbary Apes and with each other. Adult males begin to look after the young when they are a few days old. They may pick up the babies, carry them around, groom them and play with them. Males also show their babies to other males and the monkeys make chattering noises and hug each other. In other species, this would be considered threatening but among Barbary Apes this is a declaration of friendship. Here is one resting after playing with his toy  (http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k158/nique_unique/Safari%20Zoo/Japan%20Zoo/Barb-Ape-with-Toy.jpg)- soon, he'll have a little one to play with!

Our next stop: Red Pandas
