Map Making 101 - Using the Map Editor
« on: February 03, 2010, 02:35:17 PM »
For a first map I suggest you start with something simple. For this tutorial I'll use the Basic Grass Map(Small)

The first thing is to delete the zoo gate. Once the gate is deleted Save Your Game

* Remember to save often so your progress is not lost *

Return to the Main Menu and Load Saved Game

Choose the game you just saved after deleting the zoo gate.

Now you are ready to make any changes you want to the outside of the zoo walls or change the zoo walls themselves. Open the Items menu to find all the available devloper items.

Delete what you want to change for this tutorial I have just deleted what is surrounding the original gate.

Now I am ready to make any changes. At this point I saved the game again.

When decorating the outside of the zoo walls it is VERY Important to remember ONLY paths  can go to the edge of the map. All other decoration must be kept at least 1 square away from the edge.

** When you place decor at the edge of the map whether it be trees and especially fencing and zoo walls it will cause the game to crash. **

With decorating finished it is now time to place the zoo gate.

Go to the items menu and choose the gate you wish to use. For this I have chosen to change the gate to the MM waterfall gate.

Make sure the Bench in the Item Menu is facing OUT in a Southeast direction.

Save your game and test that the gate is in properly.

To do this .... after you have saved the game go to the main menu and load the game you just saved.

The easiest way to test is to go to the item menu and click on the contruction tab and choose a fence for this I have used just the first fence in the menu.

if your gate is placed backwards you will be able to add to the outside of the gate and not add to the inside of the zoo.

If your gate is in backwards just delete the gate again. Save the game. Reload the saved Game.

Go to yopur items menu and choose your gate again. Before placing turn the gate with the view selector and place the gate again. Now SAVE and reload the saved game from the main menu and repeat the test. The gate should now be placed correctly and you can now place items inside the zoo but not outside the zoo walls.

When saving your game just overwrite the previous save. When you click save your current game will be highlighted in the save game dialog box. Just click Save.

You will get a message about replacing the file. Just click Yes and the previous saved game will be overwritten with your new completed map ready for building.

The last thing to remeber once you have created your new map. Remove the map editor from your dlupdtes/updates folder before building on your new map.

Removing the map editor helps to not accidentaly delete something that shouldn't be deleted while building. Also I have heard over the years that it can cause game problems although I have never experienced any problems leaving it in the dlupdates folder while building.

Well I guess that's a good thing and we'll soon see Pukkie made maps arriving for us to play with.
