Description: A butterfly that appears randomly in your zoo.
'The Cairns Birdwing Butterfly is Australia's largest butterfly. The wingspan of the female can measure 180mm. The smaller male butterfly has green wings with black markings, while the female has black wings with yellow and white markings. The abdomen of both the male and the female is yellow and the thorax is red.
The Cairns Birdwing Butterfly lives in
tropical rainforests between Mackay and Cooktown in NE Queensland, Australia. It is most often seen flying in the canopy of the rainforest. The Cairn Birdwing Butterfly is listed as ‘common’ in Queensland.
Its survival was threatened in the past but the numbers have increased as a result of plantings of the food plant in suburban areas. The Cairns Birdwing Butterfly is
protected, despite its common status, to regulate the numbers of these butterflies being collected.
